    Hennessy shipping costs to Australia

Just a quick FYI to any other Australians out there considering ordering a Hennessy directly from their on-line store.

I've been the happy owner of a Hennessy Expedition (Which I purchased, brand new, from an eBay seller in the US a few months back) and I now want to 'upgrade' to the lighter Hyperlite model. However, I couldn't seem to find the Hyperlite on eBay so I went directly to Hennessy's own on-line store. Chose the Hyperlite a-Sym Zip Hammock, went to check out, then to my shock discovered Hennessy want USD$60 to ship to Australia!!! I instantly cancelled my order. My eBay bought Expedition 'only' cost USD$39, registered courier delivery!!!

What extra service do I get for USD$60? It's not as if I want it packed lovingly into a gold plated ivory box & hand delivered by the fair maidens of all things Hammockyness.

I subsequently sent the following query to Hennessy via email.

    "Dear Hennessy Hammocks,

I was very interested in ordering one of your Hyperlite Hammocks. However, when it came to checkout my cart I notice your shipping costs to Australia are USD$60! That stopped me in my tracks! WOW, Why so much? It makes the Hammock a whole lot less attractive price-wise. Especially when I notice the same Hammock shipped to New Zealand is only USD$20 (A third of the cost!) for what is essentially & geographically, next door. Equally interesting is that Warbonnet will ship to Australia for only USD$35. Any particular reason for that?

    Thanks,"

I'll post the reply, when (if) received.

Randy : yea but just remember yer roots and where ya come from....you got Hennessy in yer blood son......

I luckily was able to come up with a US address to ship to...

    Hey Smarteee,

I was in Mountain Designs in Chatswood today and saw that they stock Hennessy Hammocks and tarps. Didn't check out the models or prices, just noticed them on display while I was at the counter. What can I say, I'm a Warbonnet guy . Maybe the reason for the high shipping is to placate local retailers?

    Hi Marwood,

They've got the Ultralight backpacker model in Trek and Travel in Sydney for the same cash figure (AUD$199) as on the Hennessy Website (USD$199). But obviously I'd save on shipping. Which I can't complain about. However, It's the Hyperlite I'm after and Trek & Travel don't stock that model. I'm not so sure it's the whole 'Australian retail Vs Online' issue currently appearing in the local media which is at fault here as the USD$60 applies to the UK & Europe as well. I just cant get my head around why there is a USD$40 difference between delivery to Australia or NZ. After all, if it was a distance issue why wouldn't there be a separate price between Sydney & Perth?

I just feel Hennessy need to talk to their appointed shipping agents/couriers.

All is not lost, as I can quite easily order the Hyperlite and have it shipped to our LA office and then couriered to me here in Sydney. Which wont cost me as much. It's just the hassle factor involved....

To be perfectly honest if it was USD$40 I would've paid it, kept quiet and I'd now be eagerly awaiting it's delivery. But you have to admit, for a 700gm parcel, USD$60 ain't so pretty.....

Was just proposing a possible explanation not an excuse .

Having lived in the US and the Europe for nearly 10 years and only having got back to Oz last year, I'm still gobsmacked at some of the rip-off retail prices here. But still having friends, family, bank accounts and credit cards overseas I sidestep these as much as possible .

Like many here, my retail spend - such as it is - is increasingly online. The local impacts are going to be significant in the next few months and years. Something I've had many discussions about recently - a good fireside topic for this Sat arvo/evening at Calna...

I hear you Marwood, I just needed to vent some steam!

I'll be slipping a sip of Red wine in my pack this weekend to assist fireside discussions on the virtues of retail vs webtail!

Will be doing the same on the red wine front!

My most recent price gripe is that I could get pre-made whoopie slings delivered here from the US for about half what it would cost to buy the appropriate length of dyneema hollow-braid locally to make them myself. Not to mention that my recent purchase of 50m of Zing-It cost $AUD50 locally when apparently they can buy it for about US$20 to $US25 over there...

Just back from re-packing my pack -removed water, replaced with cabsav-

I'd hate to think the extra gear I would have that I dont need if the shipping tab was not such a turnoff. In most cases I can look at the total price, delivered and justify the spend. In some case where I just feel like I'm getting stung I cant do it.

The below item from a supplier I have used is good for a laugh
