    Arizona June 19-22 Hang

Hey AZ folks, going stir crazy not being able to get out and hike up here in the snowy north. Trying to put together a quick couple night trip in a couple weeks. Going to be driving down through SLC. Would love to get together with some of you all to hike and hang and maybe do some fishing too.

Looking at a couple possible spots to check out and would like some input from the locals. West clear creek looks nice, I know there has been a hang or two there but I am totally open to other recommendations. Hopping to find a stream that is very hike-able with lots of pocket water to fish in.

As part of my being able to make it down I am planning to offer an intro class for Tenkara, details--planning and cost of the class info are on my Tenkara-Fishing site.

check out the white mountains. only real source of reliable trout fishing, creeks there are suited to tenkara style.

west fork of the black river, mainstem black river, diamond, blue, white rivers. all of these feed the salt river which runs thru phoenix (as a dried up, diverted to canal system)

i may be down. i have school, so have to play it by ear. otherwise, chevelon creek running out of woods canyon lake is productive. canyon creek is returning slowly, to a blue ribbon waterway. west fork of oak creek and wet beaver are fantastic areas, but i dunno about the fishing. may be high pressure in those spots.

Hey Te-Wa, Thanks for the reply. Doing a little looking I was thinking of near Flagstaff to try and save some on drive times. Much more than 13 hours in a car and I might go crazy. In an old trip planning thread you mentioned west clear creek off the tramway trail ---think that's it. Looks reasonably central located and a nice area to hang out and explore....any thoughts on it? Clear creek looks good too but a good bit longer to get to from up here.

I want to play with some Apaches!!!! (Trout that is...)
I will be out at the freeway with my thumb out looking for a ride south...
The White Mountains are home to some BEAUTIFUL Elk... I wouldn't mind that trip either.

follow the Hike Arizona link, then click on the AZ state map, near Flagstaff. This will take you to a smaller zoomed map that has several "regions" of the Flag area. This will show you the hikes and climbs in the area(s). Keep in mind that you can go to any of the lakes on the Rim like Kinnikinnik or Long lake, by car, then walk around and camp at large in the forest (many have fees for camp "sites" but you are allowed to camp almost anywhere in the forest provided you are not on private property) http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/coconino/rec..._camping.shtml

The Southeast region is the most productive, with a bunch of lakes that are trout/northern filled. The tiny creeks that feed these lakes (like Ashurst, for instance) may be fishable with a Tenkara. Oh, and finding trees wont be hard, you will be in the largest ponderosa forest in the world.

    I'll be watching for you.

Looking at Oak creek area. Found a very detailed blog about fishing it and looks great. I am thinking about setting camp up somewhere in west Oak and hiking and fishing from that area. With the drive times down I suspect we will get down there in the late afternoon/evening on the 19th so an suggestions for spots to camp along the creek would be a lot of help. It also looks like we might need a Red Rock Pass???? anyone shed some details on that?

Hope to get to meet up with some of the AZ folks

But it's also a bit longer drive than my hall pass will allow for this time.

http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=147 IF you can park along the road, you need Red Rock Pass. Otherwise, $10 per day in Call O' the Canyon Lot.
Avoid this nonsense by taking fr 535 off of Hwy 89a just North of the Switchbacks. Take 535 to fr 231 and then go south to a bridge with a sign that says "west fork" - this is the Prescott National forest. No RR pass needed.
