Tubular Webbing Whoopie Slings?

So, I'm currently swinging in my hammock, contemplating the mysteries of the universe and wondered if one could make an adjustable whoopie sling out of tubular webbing.

Had I any on hand, or if I knew more about the particular properties of tubular webbing, I may already know the answer.

What do you thinK? Any experts in tubular webbing out there? Or maybe something similar?

My only experience with tubular webbing was some research I did about a year ago into slack-lining (the reality of my age, and the thought of my children splitting themselves vertically and then giving themselves concussions caused me to abort that endeavor). From what I saw, though, I don't know if it would constrict enough to hold fast. I think 7/64 amsteel runs cheaper than tubular webbing does, plus they pound the stuff pretty darned flat, so I imagine it would be rather difficult to work with. Still, webbing whoopies would be kind of cool (it's certainly fun to say).

I had the same thought myself last week but figured that since webbing is often so slippery and doesn't seem to compress against itself well enough to be feasible. I could be completely wrong and if so then someone get me some tubular webbing so I can make some 1 inch whoopies.

I dont know about webbing but if you could source it then whoopies made from 1 in amsteel would be cool.

I don't think the the 1/2" tubular polyester webbing that TeeDee used to use for his Bridges would work.

Amsteel works because when the cord is spliced down the center, it fills the center cavity totally so that under load the outer sheath compresses the inner rope and rips it tight. The tight fit is why the splicing can be so difficult at times.

With the tubular webbing, the size of the inner core is such that it doesn't look like that would happen. No Chinese Finger Trap effect.

Maybe I'll convince TeeDee to pull out some and experiment.

I think it's the braid that makes Amsteel suitable for whoopies, not just the fact that it's hollow. Wouldn't you have to cut holes to splice it through? That surely couldn't be a good thing. And you can't milk it like braided rope so I don't think there'd be enough friction to hold it.

I really doubt that it would work. A good test would be to take a piece of webbing and pinch two spots and push them toward each other. Do the srands open up? Does to overall diameter increase?

I have played around with tubular webbing for rope rescue and a whoopie would not work. First you would actually have make a cut in the webbing to make the constricting part of the whoopie with. This cut would be to weak to support any type of weight. Amsteel works for whoopies because of the braid and the hollow core. Without one of them the whoopie would not be possible to make. Just my two cent.
