Seems to me that you've made an excellent argument for "Dispersed" camping.
The idea of leaving a tent is also a good one. "dead tents" and sleeping bags can be found all over the place after large events, like motorcycle rallys, races etc. That way, A, you got it free, and B, its already shot, so no big loss if some slime does steal it. Add a filthy sleeping bag to it for "Proof of use" and you have a fine decoy. (Who would want a sleeping bag or the tent it's in, if they look like they're crawling with lice?)

I was just trying to picture a relatively simple fix, and was thinking...what about taking a lock/chain for a bicycle, running it around one tree, and through your whoopies?

Most "non-hangers" probably won't want to cut what appears to them to be an integrated part of the hammock would be my guess.

If someone knows enough to be confidant that they can replace what looks like an integrated part of the hammock/suspension and cuts it...I'd suspect an experienced hammock hanger...and I'd be posting here for peeps to keep an eye for it.

Just a thought...not sure on the practical application, since I'm using a stock HH suspension. Not sure what I'd do to secure mine as it is.

I have a 15' cheapo WW dog tie-out that's basically 1/8" steel cable covered with plastic and an eye on each end. I'm bringing it to all future community hangs. I'm thinking that once the hammock is hung properly, I'll take a wrap around the tree with the cable and padlock both ends to the hammock.
No anti-theft device is perfect, but this should help keep honest people honest. .....and thieves looking for an easier mark.

PS. Expensive guard dogs are often the first thing that gets stolen.

I have a little alarm we used when we left our scuba gear on the beach.
it is a simple device that has a contact that plugs unto the alarm with a headphone jack type plug.
you rig the alarm to your bag... and the wire that has the plug on it to the ground.

if they picked up the bag... it pulled the pin and the alarm attached to the bag went off...

now I guess they could have ran off with the bag and a screeching alarm... but they never did... they just dropped the bag.

now this is not a great solution unless you have someone near by... or in our case... we were diving so we had limits and were never gone more than 30 min or so
we came back one time to a screeching bag

I was just going to suggest something similar to louie's solution. You could get a motion-activated alarm and put it in your hammock. Of course you would want one that wouldn't go off whenever the wind blew the hammock!

Adjustable sensitivity and alarm duration settings could make it a pretty effective deterrent. Add even the slightest bit of security in the form of a lock or cable and I think most would-be thieves would bolt pretty quickly.

The basic ones are pretty cheap:
