Of all the things mentioned, I am liking the manikin type setup. You aren't always that visible in the hammock, so who's to know. Get a motion sensor snoring machine.....When they walk up, it starts snoring....

That sucks, sorry to hear of your loss
I like the fake lay idea - pretending someone's in the hammock hanging.

Put up a hidden camera that is triggered if someone touches the hammock. I like the fake hanger idea too. They do that in kanab Utah with the police in a parked patrol car and it works every time. We just get a kick out of it now because we see it so often.

You also could get yourself a decent dog! I used to have a dog like this and nobody, I mean NOBODY(!) was screwing around with me :
There are no dogs more loyal as an IRISH WOLFHOUND
Pac-safe may be a good solution.
Your best solution is to never trust others (sad, but unfortunately true). Take your gear down and carry it with you when in public places.
Armed guards, dogs and motion sensors sound like more hassle.
If people really want your gear, they will get it, even if it means damaging your items in the process.
Pack it up and take it with you. Probably the only sure-fire way to guarantee it will be where you left it.
Out of site, out of mind.
I have never had a problem in a campground. Festivals are another issue.
I have a little piece of forestland in town and I did just that, left it looking as if some one was sleeping in the hammock when I was not there.
On day 5 when returning to my little camp I found that someone had gone through my gear and taken a space blanket that I always carry.
Luckily no other gear was missing.
From then one I have started taking down my gear and bringing it with me.

Or you could do like a kid I met when I was "on the road" many years ago. When you're a runaway you're always worried someone's going to steal what little you've got...or just take it.
He kept a little pygmy rattlesnake in his laundry bag with his money, on top of his travel bag.
He kept a small stick and a pillow case to bag it with whenever he needed to get his money...he'd just dump the whole bag on the ground, pin the snake, and bag it.
His whole bag came up missing one time...always wondered what happened to the thief that took it. Not deadly...but darned painful and REAL hard to explain to the authorities.
I think that is the best solution. Especially when camping in a crowded area. Unfortunately, you can't trust people. The only time I leave my hammock up for extended periods of time is at home in my yard, and at Boy Scout campouts. I take it down, or with me, when I'm not going to be at camp otherwise.

The high tech route offers many possibilities. If money is no object, how about putting a Lojack or GPS in your hammock, or install a loud alarm system with a pre-recorded message that says, "Step Away from the Hammock!! Step Away from the Hammock!! The Authorities have been alerted!"
