    I have no idea what was said . . . because . . .
and this is why ignore options were invented

As stated above breaking off the head as/after it goes to seed
is like harvesting "cut flowers" aaaauuha

the cattail is a root bulb plant, and the head is at the end of its yearly growth cycle . . .

    Duh

For those that wish to stay the spread of seeds in a pond . . .
before breaking the head off put a bag over it.

The invasive part sounds funny to me . . .
What is a pond with out cattails . . .
It makes for a habitat for water fowl . . . and I have seen ponds/slews
that have never changed cattail density for 20 years +

    It's been said that:

The cattail is more useful than a pig,
as everything pig is useful except the sqweeeeeeel . . .
And a cattail has no sqweel.

regardless of the manner of which i said it, my point was valid on this topic. i'd say it again if the situation arose, maybe just a little less blunt...

    Destroy nature???

Does that mean you are also against the harvest of crops such as wheat, corn, potatoes, etc. Or just the 'wild' plants.

Does it destroy the plant if the seed pod (apples, pears, cherrys, cat tails, etc) are harvested and the rest of the plant left to propagate a new harvest?

As far as 'destroying nature', I think the ducks and geese would seriously disagree with you. There is small pond not far from my home that was frequented by ducks and geese for many years. Then the cat tails started growing around the shore edges. For a few years it was still usable by the ducks and geese. The pond is now fully carpeted by the cat tails and totally unusable by the ducks and geese since there is no open water whatsoever. Some plants are just invasive and become detrimental.

The cat tails have gained a habitat and the ducks and geese have lost theirs.

I personally think that if someone went in and eradicated the cat tails it would be just fine. I much prefer the ducks and geese and their antics than watching boring cat tails growing, but then I don't like watching grass grow either, or paint dry.

Eradicating the cat tails in this case would be restoring nature, not destroying it.

    Back on topic!

Do it! Indians and early settlers used them quite heavily for insulation (Amazing they are still here with all the cat tail destruction back in those days never mind the fact that they are perennial and are considered highly invasive.)

You have nothing to lose but time, if you find you don't like it, just take it apart shake out the cat tail, order some down to refill it with. And I've hear more than one person claim that their cat tail insulated items have lasted years with little to no degredation. And you aren't going to be destroying any nature, so do it with a clean conscience, they'll be right back the next year without fail.

And yes, cat tails are at least as useful as a pig if used correctly, or until they completely take over your pond.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful and insightful input. As you, if the cat tails dont suit the task, shake 'em out and pluck some geese.

    Cheers

Didn't read the whole thread but what about a down/cattail hybrid? Half and half maybe? Could be interesting. Feel free to name it after me.

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of/with this material?

    Give a shout.

I would try it and see if you like it and how it works. If you dont like it, you will have a lot of good tinder.

I remember reading something a few years ago stating it would not work so well. Cant remember why. Maybe it was that it would not stuff well and breaks down. Cant remember. Makes a decent fire starter though.
