I gave some consideration to going up Thursday evening after work. Get an extra night out. haven't decided yet though. Sounds better than an early Friday start, and I am hoping to make it to the trail head by 9.

I'd love to join ya'll if I'm still in the area. I'm working in Knoxville temporarily and only brought bare bones gear. How hard is the hike in to the camp site, I didn't bring any hiking shoes

I hiked it in a pair of new balance running shoes. The hike to the camp is about 2 miles I think, and pretty easy. but there are 4 stream crossings in route. Cant rock hop them, but if you dont mind wet feet for a while, they are a foot deep tops. Or just bring something to wade them in. I'm bringing crocs.

    Horse Creek Fishing

A bit of bad news for the fishing component of this outing:

"Horse Creek (Greene County, US Forest
Service Boundary Line upstream to the
    junction of Squibb Creek)
Daily limit: 7 per day except from May 1–Sep. 30
daily limit is 2. Fishing is limited to ages 12
and under, ages 65 and older, and physically
    challenged individuals.
    "
    Source TWRA Fishing Guide 2011

I don't know how that slipped by me. I checked the guide on some other areas when I saw this.
If fishing is a big part of the outing, we could easily migrate 17 miles west on the AT to Paint Creek. It has been 20 years since I have been there, but i could scout it out for hanging sites this week if desired.
Another option would be a "road trip" from Horse Creek with all of those interested. We could hike back to the trailhead and go fishing Saturday.

To give you any idea of how Paint Creek is regarding fishing..

Paint Creek has the normal creel limit of 7 with brook trout needing to be over 6".

A footnote: Fishing for those between 12 and 65 is permitted above where Sqibb Creek enters Horse Creek. This would include Sqibb Creek and Sarvis Cove Creek (also Jennings Creek on the other side of the Poplar Cove ridge). The creek that flows DIRECTLY next to the campsite permits fishing for all ages with appropriate license and permits.
" For the team", I will make the tremendous personal sacrifice and see about fishing there this week.

That does put a damper on the fishing party, guess I will have to get a fake ID and a cane ;P Can we hike to the closest fishing option? Never opposed to a good hike. Anyone know if you can use live bait in the park?

You can put me down as a YES for attendance purposes.

I went by there yesterday. There is fishing for those between 12 and 65 if you fish above the Squibb Creek bridge. That basically leaves, Squibb, Sarvis, Jennings and the upper part of Horse Creek to fish. Single hook artificial only and a trout stamp is required. Those areas will be pretty much all "natives". There are a couple of other promising streams that would take a long hike to reach as well.

It was a bit humbling to have fished with my "super duper flies' with limited sucess and then see a 4 year old with a Zebco 202 and salmon eggs catching foot long trout left and right.

In other words, for those between 12 and 65, you might have to catch a couple to make a meal. The creel is 7 with nosize limit excpet brwons need to be over 6".

I'm not surprised Walter, When I was a kid we'd catch Rainbows all day long with our K-Mart Zebco's in Holston River with worms and doe balls! I had a special method though that NOBODY USES!
