East TN Hangout at Horse Creek (July 15-17)

Anybody be interested in getting a hang going in East TN? I'm down by Knoxville, and want to learn some good places to hang around here.

    EDIT -
Hangout is decided for July 15-17, 2011 at the Horse Creek Recreation Area.

This post will be updated with a signup sheet soon.

East Tennessee is loaded with good hanging opportunities. Now that it is hot, I tend to stick with places high up or next to cold water.
How much of a hike were you thinking?

Would you have any interest in fly fishing as well? Were that to be the case, we could set up a base camp by a decent stream and spend the weekend fishing up and down it. If it were to be a group, those not interested in fishing might have time to pursue some bushcraft type stuff.

On the other side of the spectrum, we could just do a backpack and perhaps split up the vehicles to allow some shuttling and different routes.

Have you been out much in this area yet?

Well, it wouldn't need to be either. I'm just not a big fan of making many miles when the heat index is close to 100. That's usually a good opportunity to slow things down a bit.

Citico has some good spots on either the North Citico or South Citico trails. The water helps keep it cooler. There are other spots out that way that might require some bigger miles to get to.

Horse Creek in Greene County has some nice cool spots as well, but the fishing won't be as good.
Marguerite Falls is nearby. There is not a great flat spot for a tent, but if you're willing to set up on a 30 degree slope, it is one cool place to hang.

That looks great, and I am almost always on a slope around here anyway, so where is the place in the photo?

It's South of Greeneville off of Hwy 107. As I recall, it is only about a 2 mile hike from the trailhead to get there. It's been a few years since I've been there, and I'm not sure what the tornadoes did when they passed through the Horse Creek/ Camp Creek area.

Frozen Head State Park is between the GSMNP and the BSFNRRA.

Plenty of trees here in East TN, just not in my backyard. I just finished building Mr. TrailHX's portable hammock stand - what a great device. Are you new to Knoxville or new to hanging?
