Makes me glad I opted for the Hex design. I can't imagine a more miserable night than laying in a puddle of water in my hammock.

After reading this thread it seems there really is no debate about what the better design is.

Thanks Knotty for the info. I was considering a diamond for my HH Explorer Deluxe. Needed another tarp for the loaner hammock, guess I'll stick to the Hex Tarps. Time to set aside some funds.

I don't have any experience in blowing rain. I was really disappointed to see how little the larger diamond tarp covered (because i have one). The drawing made me ask what could be done to lower the tarp and get more coverage. If you were to make two cutouts at the ridgeline where the tarp tie outs are, and install a 2nd tie out (two at each ridge line end). It should lower the tarp and provide more coverage. Do you think the tarp would hold up if the cutouts were reinforced? Think it is worth pursuing? see professionally drawn sketch... (i hope this works)

skin2red, it might work and I'm all for experimenting but it's not something I'm interested in pursuing at this point. Hoping you'll give it a try and report back. Just make sure to reinforce the edges along the slot to avoid chafe.

I made the diamond yesterday (without the split I proposed) because I had already ordered the fabric. It was my first project. A lot to learn about sewing machines and sewing and ....... On the WBBB, the feet and head are really exposed. I wish I'd made a hex instead, but Surely folks get by with the diamond. There are too many of them. I wonder what they do. I realize I'm asking a person who is decided not to use them.

Actually I do have two diamond tarps but they are the asym diamonds for Hennessy Hammocks. In the case of the Hennessy, the tarp is strung very close to the hammock and actually attaches, via prusik knots, to the hammock suspension. The system works reasonably well but is very minimal. Not much room for anything other than sleeping under that tarp.

I do understand the hex tarp idea, and understand the rectangular tarp extra weight.
But can't you just use the extra fabric to form either doors or back onto the tarp to simulate a hex?
Or us it diagonal to make a asym tarp?

Looking for flexibility with my tarp.

Mil Poncho are small for trying this, you'll need 2, and trying this isn't there a chance you get water inside where they need to overlapped.
As an undercover they could easily be used.
