Dual Mode Bridge Hammock

The last few trips with 2sticks I had a hard time deciding on taking a gathered end or bridge hammock. My preference is the bridge but it is hard to hang under the same tarp with 2sticks if needed. I remembered Grizz's dual mode hammock and decided to make something similar.

It is very similar to a Claytor or Clark when used in the standard mode. It is able to convert to a bridge fairly quick. It makes a full size bridge that is very comfortable. I use my hiking poles in the end channels for spreader bars. I finally put a zipper in a hammock. This will be my go to hammock for trips with 2sticks.

I tested at the Walls of Jericho trip this past weekend. I fully intended to use in bridge mode but when we got to camp the place we wanted to hang did not have the trees for 2 setups. So on the first trip out I took advantage of the dual mode and used it as a gathered end under the same tarp as 2sticks

Are your hiking poles fixed length poles or adjustable?

Are your hiking poles carbon fiber or aluminum?

Are your hiking poles homemade?

What is the diameter of the hiking poles (the length is obviously 3')?

Does your 28 oz hammock weight include the hiking poles?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm trying to figure out a way to use carbon fiber poles. It would be great if they were also hiking poles, but I need 4' long poles, not 3'.

The hiking poles are TiGoat APG's. They are adjustable and weigh about 3.5 oz each. I use a short section of .433 easton tent pole as a spacer around the lower section to get a solid spreader that is 36" long. This is shown a little better in this video around the 6:45 mark

The 28oz does not include the poles. This was just a prototype to work out any problems. I used what materials I had on hand. If I make a final version I think I can get it in the 20 oz range. This hammock will only be used on shorter trips with 2sticks so I was not overly worried about total weight.

HMMM. . . 7 ounces for a pair of hiking poles is excellent and would drop a 1/2 lb off my bridge hammock weight. Now I need to come up with the $130 & shipping. DIY hammocks are not cheap!

yours is a great reason for a dual mode bridge hammock! so glad the idea can bring father and daughter closer together

I appreciated your placement of suspension cut shaped fabric between the bugnet and the hammock body. Fitting sewn in bugnets to a bridge hammock is a bit of a pain.

Yours has nice simple lines to it. Mine has a pad pocket, and I'll tell you, getting everything lined up right for the hem that brought it together took a lot of measuring and pinning.

In the end though, mine is the most comfortable hammock I have. Also the heaviest DIY hammock I've made
