    New River Paddle/Hike & Hang

    On Saturday, June 25,
A small group of us are getting together for a paddle/camp overnighter and thought it would be fun to invite other hangers!

We went last year and here are the pics of last years trip.

We're meeting about 11:30am at Kings Creek access allow us time to set up the shuttle and still get to camp fairly early. The campsite can fill up on weekends, so its good to arrive early. This will leave some time for exploring the trails in the area or other activities as we wish.

After putting in at King’s Creek road access we will paddle to the Allegheny Access campsite about 5 river miles or 2.5 hrs of paddling. This primitive campsite has no road access and is only accessible by water. There are several trails in the area so we can do some hiking either on Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning. On Sunday we will continue down the river about 4 miles or two hrs of paddling to the takeout at the NC Rt. 93 Bridge.

Paddlers should be self contained which means you must be able to carry all your camping gear in your kayak or canoe. Dry Bags are recommended.

You will need food for dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. I would also suggest bringing two lunches, one for Saturday and one for Sunday. We may take out in time for lunch Sunday, but we will be out in the boonies and there is not much purchasing options.

There is potable water at the campsite so there is no need to carry or treat water for camp.

There is a small fee to camp, its on the honor system (Its less than $5 as I recall).

Here is a link to a map of the river

Info on the New River State Park

    For GPS:
River Camp USA at 2221 Kings Creek Road, Piney Creek, NC. The access is right across the road from River Camp USA.

We had a blast last year! With high water it took us no time to get to the camping area and it was an easy and fun paddle. This year is predicted to be moderate flow. We had the whole place to ourselves...well...except for a curious racoon!

I usaully have to use a canoe to get to my camp spots and it's great. Always cuts down on other people near by.

That's right. I like these kinds of trips because mainly the most outdoor experienced are there. Or at least are interested in learning.

Bridge out above Kings Creek Access

I paddled the New River (last Saturday 6/4/11) and took out at Kings Creek Access. The small bridge on the road above Kings Creek Access, on the way to the VA 93 bridge takeout, was closed for rebuilding. That will affect your shuttle. Plan for a long detour.

Have a fun time. I love to hammock camp at the Allegheny Access site. It is so peaceful.

    Happy Paddling.

    Sounds nice

I'm not familiar with this part of the river. And I couldn't get the map to load. Is the water pretty calm? No serious rapids?
Gentle raindrops and mighty oceans...neither can exist without the other.
Time heals all wounds...but it usually leaves a pretty big scar.

Hope you guys have fun! Timberrr and I would love to join you but that is the day after my two week summer discovery performing arts camp ends. After two weeks of 'playing' with 8-12 year olds and I'm going to need a day (or three) of rest!

I am still planning on seeing you in September though ldcakes!

Ahh If you weren't so far away I'd suggest you come rest with us. But the drive from Orlando is a long haul.
    Looking forward to September!
