I use some old allen wrenches. I seem to collect them whenever I buy anything that needs to be put together with provided hardware- they're always in the bag with the nuts and bolts.
I have two section of 1/2" PVC that are about 3 1/2" to 4" long. They work fine, slip through the loop I use to wrap the tree with, very light weight, and since they are white, I can find them in the dark real easy. Never had a lick of trouble with them.
Thinking about running a cord through them and splicing it or knotting it so I can hang stuff from it if I choose to. maybe this weekend.

I use 4.5" lengths of hickory from the handle ends of an old pair of drum sticks.

ROCK ON SOUPY! \m/{>_<}\m/
I'm currently using 3" lengths of EMT tubing. Works like a charm, and I had a section just sitting in my garage for some reason when I moved in.

When doing trail maintenance, using loppers on brush, think about how many finger-sized and smaller stems that you cut. I chose two straight ones, one was oak, the other is an unknown species that was tougher to cut than the oak. Dried them in my car(summer kiln) for a couple weeks, then sanded them into DIY wooden dowels.
Is that a contender for winning the most labor intensive, for least value, DIY project?
I made my first toggles out of a 90' tall popular tree that I cut down to clear an area to build my house. Had it sawed into lumber, kilned dried and left to age in the basement for 20 years. Then I sawed a piece into a square strip, hand planed the corners off and sanded it into a round dowel used to make the toggles. Wish my lathe wasn't busted.
