    Raleigh Area?

Might be an opportunity in late August to make a short trip to Raleigh, NC. I did a little googling but if anyone has personal experience they'd like to share I'd appreciate any input on cool dayhikes and places to hang.

One place I have been near Raleigh is Raven Rock State Park. It's a really interesting place geologically and a fun hike, lots of scenery too.

Only thing I'd add ... central to eastern NC in the summer is a tick sanctuary! Deet will be your friend ...

Yep, it is also still oppressively hot and humid here. If you have a car and can stand about a 3 - 4 hour drive either west to the NC mountains or northwest to the Virginia Grayson Highlands area you'll find it much more pleasant.

August is pretty miserable outside in NC but close to Raleigh you have Umstead, Raven Rock (45 min away) and Uwharri (1.5 hours away). Eno river state park isn't too far either but I'm not real familiar with it. I believe that part of the MST tracks along the south side of Falls Lake which on the north side of the city.

I took a buddy to Umstead last weekend and we did about 6 miles. There was a bit of a cool front at the same so it was like 70-80F all day which was great. At the time we made the plans it was actually suppose to be low 90's Glad they were wrong.

Eno River park in Durham (next door to Raleigh) is nice, but no long trails. The longest set of loops is around 5 miles total. The Falls lake trail follows the southern side of the lake and is around 50 miles with lots of trees for hanging on.

    Raleigh in August?

You will find that Jacksonville is cooler in August than Raleigh. Good luck.

Thanks guys. I didn't realize anyplace could be more oppressive than Jax. :-D

I think I'll just tuck these ideas away and wait for cooler times. Eno and Raven Rock do look nice. The Highlands would be good but it's already a long drive from Jax. I'd hate to do another 3-4 on top of that.

    Much obliged!

Being a former resident of FL and now a resident of NC I can assure you that NC summers are indeed worse. I don't understand it either, but mostly blame it on a complete lack of wind during the summer months.
