i'm gonna take my old collage room mate, whom i've just converted to hanging.
i haven't been up there since the 80's. i'm sure it's still there.

thats only 75 miles from me

It's been a while since I backpacked up there, but I've used that area quite a few times in past years.
You'll defiantly be cooler there... at least 10° & maybe as much as 20° cooler than the NC Piedmont.

The most scenic hike is along the Black Mountain Crest Trail, but I don't think there is any water up there. The only possible water on that trail might be a little spring near Deep Gap if I remember correctly, but my recollection is that it is unreliable. Someone else would need to confirm that.

But if you take one of the trails down to the Buncombe Horse Trail, there is water near the intersection w/ the Mt Mitchell/MTS trail, & several other creeks along the Buncombe Horse Trail too probably. But I'm going by memory & what I see on the map.

The views on the Buncombe Horse Trail are not as many or as grand as on the Crest Trail, but... gotta have that water.

I used to hike down & camp on the Buncombe Horse Trail & do loop day hikes up onto the Crest Trail, ending back up on the Buncombe Horse Trail.

If you wanted more hiking, you might look at the two trails going from Mt Mitchel State park down to campgrounds along Hwy 80 at the base of Mt Mitchel.

    Just a few thoughts.

    thx slowhike,
    sounds like MM very well.
we'll definitely be emulating your trail name on this trip, probably doing more hanging than hiking. going to push the limit of lazy, might even see some guitar, mando and harpoon action? (that should keep the wildlife away, maybe other humans too!) if you're bored or in need of some comedy take a ride up.
after talking with my bud last night, he suggested we might also consider GrandFather mtn instead?
when we figure it out i'll post the "chillin' plan" .

Newt, watch for the final plan.

we cut the 2 niter short. 40mph sustained winds with gusts to 70. constant rain!
the site we had reserved (#9) had NO trees.
the only sites on mt mitchell for hangers are #5 and 6 the rest are okay for tents but hangers will find them difficult.
