    Incubator question

    Hi All,
I'm getting ready to order a 3 season incubator, just had a few questions.
Does it need any overfill to stop the down moving around?
Have people found the 20 degree rating to be fairly accurate? I think I must be turning into a cold sleeper, as my 3 season yeti can only get me down to about 40 in comfort.

I've done searches, but haven't uncovered a lot about this quilt. Thanks in advance!

I have a 3 season and don't seem to have a problem with the down moving around too much. I have never taken it below 35 degrees. My wife is a cold sleeper and she uses a winter incubator for the same temps that I use the 3 season. Unless you are a gram weanie, I would err on the side of too warm. You can alway loosen it away from your hammock to get some air flow.

a GREAT choice in quilts IMHO

IMHO I would only recommend over stuff if you plan on taking the quilt below the rated temp. Adam (AKA storm crow) puts plenty of down in his quilts. I have found his ratings to be conservative and his temps are rated generously

Yes I went down to 17 last year in my 3 season incubator nad had no problems

it has a review that I did as well as some pictures. It's a great quilts that is so warm, and fluffy and filled with downy goodness.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

No issues with down migration in any of my HG quilts.

If you are saying that your 3 season Yeti can only get you to 40 you should definitely overstuff (for extra warmth, not to stop down migration) or go winter even.

If you are not concerned with the extra couple of oz and/or have the extra bucks, go for more.

I used a wellllllll-ventilated winter Incubator in the mid 70's two weekends ago and slept comfortably and used the same quilt to get me comfortably down to -2 at Mt. Rogers.

Better to have and be able to ventilate because you are too warm than not have and wish you were too warm.

P.S. to add a little more to the conversation while staying on topic a big part of insulation is how much clothing are you wearing to sleep. Layering while sleeping in a 3 season quilt is going to get you much lower temps then just your skives. What were you wearing while sleeping in your yeti. Also tendertoe has has a good point and if your 3 season yeti is only taking you down to 40 then a winter incubator and or over stuff may not be the worst idea.

I just got mine and have no experience with it yet. I did hang it up and the down looks plenty full enough. Burningcedar had his to 20F and said he was comfy...
Storm and wife does make a fine quilt

I had mine to 30 degrees recently and 20 is a go...if you have your tarp set to block breezes/wind. No down migration at all with the stock 900 fill. I was wearing cotton long sleeveed t-shirt and sox with a light poly thermal bottoms. The head was covered with a wool watch cap but could have been in birthday suit and comfortable enough.

No overfill needed for me but I would like a wider Incubator, I'm a 50L jacket size though. YMMV

Haven't taken mine to real low temps yet, 43 is the lowest so far and I was very warm. There is a definite taper in my UQ and I haven't had any problems with down migration. I have had down migrate to the sides of my TQ, though. I just use gravity and my hand to put it back near the center. No real reason to overstuff, I tried and Adam said he overstuffs them already so there's no need. If you're that cold of a sleeper I would just go with a Winter Incubator instead. If the temps are real warm just vent like crazy and don't use much on top. You definitely have some options! Good luck!

I've been having some interesting experiences lately with insulation.
Last weekend, wearing thermal top and bottom plus a light fleece jumper and beanie, I was fine down to freezing in just my peapod, no top quilt. Toasty warm.

The weekend before, I was on the ground with my JRB Stealth, lying on a POE Ether thermal and windscreen reflector inside a bivi. Wearing thermal top and bottom, fleece beanie and jumper, windshirt and raincoat and still froze my butt off.

When using my yeti with black mamba on top, I was wearing thermal top and bottom, fleece beanie and jumper, top half was toasty, my back was like ice.

    No idea what's going on!

Wentworth - Sounds like you don't have your Yeti adjusted correctly. Have somebody lay in it while you adjust the suspension. You could also take pics and post them here and we can try to help you out...
