Any suggestions for an overnighter with 6yr old son in the central ny/pa area. Would prefer nice vistas etc. I am thinking around 5-10miles total with 2 days of hiking. Old loggers path(partial) was suggested. any thoughts

There are some nice trails and views near the North South Campground in the Catskills.
Honestly.. my favorite spot is West Mountain Shelter.
Go to Bear Mountain and head South on the Appalachian Trail. The Shelter is 5 miles from Bear Mountain and you get some good climbs and great Vistas on the way there.
They changed the trail on Bear Mountain so there are no natural water sources on Bear Mountain. Some small water sources on the way to West Mountain.

For 5-10 miles total you'll probably have to do an out and back as the loops I know of in the north central PA area, Old Loggers Path and Loyalsock Link Loop, are closer to 30 miles.
I'll take a look at my OLP map and see if I can find a vista campsite with parking at a distance that works.

Knotty,
I have an old loggers path map and was thinking of parking in Masten and doing the Cherry Ridge loop however my map has no campsites on it.
Given that you are in Horseheads, how about either the Sugar Hill State Forest or the Finger Lakes National Forest.
I took my son (3.5 at the time) on his first overnight hike on the Finger Lakes trail section in the National Forest last year, and it is only about 12 miles (we did about half of it) with wild camping along the route.
I haven't been to Sugar Hill in years, but I recall it having several loop trails.

This is true Knotty! I am leaning more towards a state park(hammock of course) and then do a couple of day hikes. I think my son would enjoy it more as there would be more to do.
