It really all depends on youth conditioning. My formative camping years were in the English Lake District, and Snowdonia (Wales). Both characterized by consistent rain. The first thing one did when halting was to set up some kind of rain shelter. That habit persists. I note that UK tent descriptions/tests, always comment on fly first pitching, which is almost impossible with most US tens. I note that nowadays, UK manufacturers promote emergency "Bothy Bags" ot be used for lunch breaks as well as emergency situations.

I rather enjoy setting up my hammock tarp--it's setting up the tarp that I use to cover my car's missing back window in the soft top that I can't stand. Can't tell you how many times I've had this thought run through my mind: "Hmmm, 20%-30% chance of showers today? I'll play the odds." Only to find that my car has been turned in to an aquarium. Mildew-licious .
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

I set my tarp up stakes and all then place the tarp in the snake skins if the weather is nice. if things go pear shaped its literally seconds to deploy. I carried this over fro tent camping in the steamy August Tx summers. I found that the fly was useless with out being staked when it really comes down. Also Murphy says there will be a rock 2 inches below the surface every where you put a stake during the shuffle.

+1 on the method and on Murphy's law!

    LOL, Tim.

A week or two ago my nephew and I filled up the back of our truck with old clothes to make a thrift store donation run. We got tired and figured we'd donate the stuff the following week. Needless to say, we will now be paying $40 dollars to make a dump run instead.

Yeah, I got trapped by very high water on the "back side" of a creek during a 0% chance of rain forecast. And last night I strung the tarp high, mostly as an awning, but I could have quickly "weathered" it down. Again, 0% rain forecast, but my folks said it did rain at their place. I got lucky.

That Bothy Bag looks like the original "Portable Cone of Silence"

Being in Alberta, rain can happen anytime. It's just not worth the risk.
Learning how to tie a couple knots never killed nobody. First ones I ever learned were pretty hard but they've kept my shoes on me for the better part of 45 years.

I do like to sleep without my tarp once in a while, but setting up my tarp is an area in which I am constantly seeking improvement: how many seconds can I save, how little cordage do I need, etc., etc...
