    Surprise!

We've all seen it: people set up tents, stick 3 or 4 stakes in the ground, and call it good. It doesn't look like rain...who needs a rainfly? I used to think of this as a rookie mistake, but recently, I've seen seasoned hangers do the same thing (you know who you are!), only to do the 4am scramble.

Well, now it's my turn. I came in yesterday with 100# of corn in my truck. With no rain in the forecast, I decided to leave it 'till this morning. You know what happened next. With over 1" in the gauge, and counting, the NWS said, "Whoopsie! Our computer didn't model this."

Takeaway: Tarps only work when they're hung and staked.

I remember the weather man giving a zero chance of rain in the forecast. We got 2 1/2" in the afternoon. That night on the evening weather, he said it would be a long time before he would forecast a zero chance of rain again.
    I always deploy the tarp.

I'm "kinda" guilty. If the weather looks good, I'll string up my tarp but leave it in the snake skins. That way I get to enjoy the night sky and cooling breezes. If the weather changes, I can stake out the tarp in less than a minute (I keep the stakes and a "hammer rock" close by).

I've had to do the midnight deploy a couple of times and so far have successfully beat any downpour.

That's the main reason I like snake skins!

I'll admit I almost always put it up- keeps leaves and stuff from falling into/onto hammock (and me) also gives a sense of 'enclosure' which I find comforting..just my own quirks, I suppose.
KM (who did go out a couple weeks ago with the tarp up, but both halves to one side, mostly to block a streetlight in the campground, but able to be flipped over if precip should appear..)

Learned my lesson the hard way too. Now always have the tarp up.

i'm a known no tarp guy. unless rain is emminent i won't hang my tarp. i'd rather do the 4am scramble than hang it and not need it. i like to look around while i'm in my hammock...
