I was telling my gf about this thread and mentioning how my new wbbb will be better for the dog than my Hennessy. I have been told that the dog will be in the tent with her if we go camping. I'm trying to get her off the ground but she's pretty hesitant. If I succeed then pup will have to rise up too.

I was thinking a double layer blackbird was probably a safe bet. I've never seen one in person, but some of the comments I've read imply the nylon body goes up pretty high. Well, to be more specific, there were a few comments I read comparing the Switchback and the Blackbird, and it was stated that the SB had a better "view", thus implying the nylon body of the BB was higher and blocking some of this persons line of sight.

Keeping claws away from mesh sounds like a good idea. But, I've never done this before. Perhaps I'm over-thinking this.

Typically when I've been out with my dog I was on the ground in a floorless single-wall shelter, so claws weren't previously an issue. Hanging sounds soooo much more comfortable, though.

Go with a DJ XL, it's double layer and the material is relatively thick. I had a WBB 1.1 double at one point and I didn't like the material at all. It fealt too thin and flimsy and wasn't as comfy as my DJ fabric is. If you decide on WBB, go with the 1.7 double. It's not that much heavier and it gives you a little peace of mind when sleeping with your pup. My .02, HYOY.

    Dog in DIY Hammock

Well, after thinking about the possibility of my pup shredding any hammock and/or netting I put up, I decided to go the DIY route. That way if the hammock did get destroyed, I wouldn't be out a lot of cash. We've only been out on one overnight so far. At first she was pretty nervous about getting in the hammock, but it didn't take her too long to get back in the swing of things. When I made breakfast the next morning she eagerly hopped back in to catch some more zzz's.

I haven't made myself a bug net yet, but that's coming soon. We did get bit up a little, but not too bad. It was raining that night and my clothes had been treated with permethrin, which helped a lot at keeping the blood suckers at bay.

I've taken my dog on about a dozen outings in my Hennessy...never had an issue with the bottom entry. She's only 17# or so, but also she tends to sleep to my side, never directly over the velcro.
