    Hi from southern ontario

Hello everyone!, glad to be here. I've just purchased a hennessey/asym/zip and I am in the process of making my own snakeskins for it.

I also got some carabiners (from walmart) and hope they will support the hammock, they are rated at 100 lbs each and I only weigh in at about 165lbs. so I'm thinking it should hold each end alright? I haven't tested it yet so we'll see. I know I should look into mountain climbing ones but for now this is what I have. The snakeskins I'm making are a bit longer than they should be at the moment I'm wondering If the length really matters if they're too long.
    Thanks everyone!

Welcome to the forum from another southern ontario member.

In regards to your biners, you may want to wait for climbing biners instead of the walmart ones you have. It's not necessarily the weight you are covering but the amount of force exerted to hang. MEC will ship them out to you, or you can use a continuous loop prussic method (if you have some amsteel) for right now on your existing spectra line.

You don't even really need biners if you are using the hennessy figure 8 knot. Just thread the tree huggers through themselves.

Hey there and welcome! As dragon360 said, climbing rated biners are safer to use for sure.

Welcome, glad to see another Ontario hanger out there.

Gonna have to agree on those walmart biners, be very careful if you insist on using them, and hang very low to the ground.

Could also research a marlin spike hitch and just use some sturdy dead fall that you find near your hang site.

sounds good ,this is what got my interest was in this youtube video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iJTjful66M

it really seems to be a good method of hooking up the hammock quickly and easily. I'd like to have a quick connect/disconnect system, and it also seems to use climbing equiptment. because canadian tire or walmart don't seem to have the rings I would need. the nearest MEC is in burlington as I'm in st. catherines. ontario. and thats 1/4 tank of gas right there. just for clips I'd like to find something locally, even as dragon said I still can go with the stock supplied straps alone. but I'd like to impliment what was shown in the video it seems to work well.

The biners are Coghlans large biner carry handles in blue.

MEC will ship for like $6-7. Not sure that helps with your timeline though. They also have those rings (descending rings - also found in the climbing section).

decending rings, Thanks Dragon that helps to know what to look for.
I might have to make another trip sometime and do it right. crashing to the ground still hurts If I remember correctly...another thing I'm working on is implimenting an under quilt, but that will come later... Thanks!

update: There is a store here called outdoors oriented I'm going to check there and let you all know how it works out. Thanks again!, I'll let you all know how the skins and clips go.

    Greetings blademaster_j

Welcome to the forums. Great to have another Ontario hanger in the ranks. As the others have mentioned if you are going to use a carabiner for your hammock suspension then it should be a climbing rated one due to the amount of force that can be exerted on the suspension.

Just for the record and to save yourself a trip to MEC, the Burlington store does not stock the descending rings that dragon360 mentioned. However, I seem to recall that there is a climbing gear store out your way (I used to rock climb myself) as there is some local rock climbing out on the Niagara escarpment.

Give http://www.peaksrockclimbing.com/contact-us these guys a call and inquire, it could save you some gas. If not and you can wait until the mail service is operational in Canada again, MEC will ship you anything you can order from their website.

    Cheers

    Brian
