Browning Hill and Brown Hollow June 11/12 2011

Finally got some pics uploaed, so here's a bit of a trip report. It was some amazingly good weather for hiking and hanging. I slept with my DIY insultex UQ and just a dream sack (silk sleeping bag type thing) and was comfortable. Went sans fire (which I've been trying to do more, especially on my solo trips) and did all of my cooking over my Brasslight alcohol stove. The simpler my setup becomes, the more I'm enjoying my time in the woods. And I was enjoying my time out there quite a bit when my setup wasn't so simple and I was spending a lot of time gathering and chopping firewood and maintaining a fire.

    Alright, on to the pics!

I love munching on sassafras leaves as I hike.

At the top of Browning Hill.

Poor baby birds. . . Their nest is dangling by a few strands of grass under them. Momma bird is still taking care of them tho. I saw her a few times as I was having lunch.

    Home sweet home.

Emergency spork repair. I keep meaning to pick up one of the titanium ones.

Dinner time. Red beans and rice with smoked sausage. Yummy stuff. Pic is a little blurry because I'm swinging gently in my hammock while it simmers. Pardon my hairy arm in the shot.

Waking up on Sunday morning. I look pretty groggy, but believe it or not I got up and hiked around the area for an hour or so before I made coffee and breakfast.

Found this orienteering course waypoint. I'd like to find the information on the rest of the course.

I also found the cemetery that I was looking for. There are a few nicer head stones like this, but there are also a lot of pieces of sandstone that look like thew were just brought up from the stream bed. Anything that was etched on them is long gone.

My watering hole, and the roots of the tree beside it.

It's finally breakfast time. Smoked sausage. . .

    . . . and bannock

    My other watering hole.

And some cliffs that I passed on the way in.

I didn't take many more pictures because I was conserving the last of the battery life on my phone. Hope you enjoyed the ones I did take and post.

Oh, and Bonsaihiker. . . If you see this, it was good seeing you on the trail. I hope you had a good night wit you r son up on the Hill!

Thanks for the pics and report. Looks like you had a good time.

I usually chew on sassafras twigs (new growth). I'll try the leaves.

What's the knife in the sausage pic?

    You're welcome, and I did.

I've never tried the twigs myself. . . I'll have to give them a try.

The knife is a Nessmuk pattern made by Jeff White. I don't know where exactly he's based, but he's in Indiana somewhere. I got it at the Indy gun and knife show a couple of years ago, and I love it.

Looks like I missed a great time...

I am hoping to get out this weekend just for a night.....need it....Work is nuts.....LOL..

And that knife looks to be a modern day version of a 1780's trades knife mostly found in the south eastern part of the US.....
I do 18th Century re-enacting, and I have 10 + knives most all hand made...

Salamander....I got to get this bamboo to you soon.....wife is yelling at me to get it out of the garage....

GOing to be in Indy towards the end of this week....give me a call...
