    Knots To Know

I did a search and sifted through "knots" and after about 15 minutes I gave up so hopefully we can contribute to this post and make a sticky for the newbies like me...

I now realize you need to know more than a square knot when out there hammocking and backpacking. I would hate to be woken up by my hammock hitting the ground due to a knot failure...

Post the type of knot, it's use and related instructions.

I found this one to be useful for lashing my bamboo tripod together... It's a clove hitch, lashing, frapping and tying off.

    Thanks everyone

Animated knots is a great place to learn how to do some. I like to use the Albright knot for tieing two pieces of cordage together and you learning how to do a prussik is a must when it comes to hammock camping.

Here are some of the knots I find useful -

The prusik and the klemheist are used in tarp ridgelines and guylines

I use the blood knot to make loops of shock cord

A water knot is good to know for joining webbing together

The Double Overhand is one of the knots used in the construction of soft shackles

Just in case you don't already know it, everyone should know how to tie a bowline knot

    Hope this helps!

Any reason you like the Ashley over a Double Overhand? That's what I use as a stopper knot...

    These aren't jusy for hammocking:

Buntline Hitch is good to know. Make the end slipped (instead of feeding the working end through, make a bight and feed it through) and it comes undone easily.

Tautline Hitch is good for adjustable guylines.

    Truckers Hitch
is good to use mechanical advantage to get a nice tight ridgeline.

hppyfngy - I went back and look at mine and lo and behold, I had the wrong knot bookmarked.... I also use a double overhand knot. There was lots of discussion about which knot was best in the original Nacrabiner thread and I just bookmarked all of the different stopper knots for reference.

    Thanks for the catch!

    My top knots are:
    Bowline for loops
Double sheet bend for joining 2 lines.
Rolling hitch, also known as tautline hitch when used to make adjustable loops
Larks head to attach loops to objects.
Prussik (which is basically a larks head with extra wraps/tucks)
    Truckers hitch
    Figure 8 stopper
    Constrictor knot

I learned a ton of knots in scouts, in the navy, sailing, whitewater rescue, and just as a hobbyist, and find these knots are the ones I use the most.

a long time ago I put together a general list of knots for WB: http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/show...9057#post99057

for various reasons I have not updated that article for a long time so a couple additional knots that I have picked up from HF should also be mentioned:

    Canadian Jam Knot: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=31223
Buntline hitch: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buntline_hitch suggested by Brandon
adjustable loop: a sliding larkshead - see http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...1&postcount=14 at end of post

    also see: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=31303
