I didn't dig back through to see exactly why I made that comment, but here is the gist of it - you want the stake on the left, not the one on the right.

Make a conscious effect to drive the stake so that the boom is flat with the ground or even slightly raised on the tip. That will make sure the stake is driven all the way into the ground so it provides maximum hold and the tip of the boom is more easily accessed for attaching the guy-line.

Simply put, avoid the stake on the right. Less stake is holding and it is not taking advantage of the angles as well.

    Perfect! Thanks!

I was thinking correctly - glad to see it confirmed

So, maybe I missed it, what did you make your stake & booms out of?

Rigid Conduit not EMT, correct? 1 1/4 EMT is about 10 bucks while Rigid is 25.

I use the EMT - 1" and 1.25" so they nest and the stake booms nest inside of them.

Excellent, I'll hit the store tomorrow. I have a hang/model airplane meet next week and wanted to not setup and dominate the playground area where the trees are.

    6061-t6 schedule 40

Looking at the aluminum route, not as cheap but hopefully strong enough to accomplish the rig. 1 inch nominal has pretty thick walls. Not planning on nesting so will stick to same size. Also thinking of using 1/4 rod epoxied 1 inch from top to keep the lines in check.

This worked really well for me this weekend, though I got the angles of my spikes wrong when I drilled them, I made do.

Sun coming in by my feet in the morning. Uggggh, it gets up early in Iowa.

Bought 1" X .138 wall, 6061-T6 round tube. $15.40 for 10' stick, had them cut to 74". When I got home I cut 4@ 1' for stake bridges. Also bought 12' .25" 6061-T-6 for $3.56. Cut this 4@ 1.75" and 2@ 2.0". Drill 1/4" holes 1" from front on bridge pieces and 2" from top of long poles. epoxied rods, centered on tubes to act as line bollards. Next, drilled 1/4" holes at 45 degrees starting 3/8" from back, 90 degrees from bollards. I have to get more 1/8" amsteel to make guy lines and 7/64" amsteel for ridge line. Oh, and 4@ 12" spikes and two caps for bottom of long poles to put a short spike through to help with setup.
