    Mixed under quilt 16 oz.

At first I was thinking about doing an under quilt with cuben fiber on one side and uncoated sil nylon on the other. I shown that this may cause problems with condensation.

So I have decided to cut strips of sil-nylon and strips of cuben, then sew one strip cuben and one sil-nylon. Alternating one then the other. Then use the two panals to do the quilt. Then eash baffle will have cuben fiber on one side then sil-nylon on the other side. I belive this will salve the breathability issue.

In the end I will have a 20*, full leanghm quilt,72 in X 45 in 2.5 in baffles, that should still come in under 16 oz's.

Anyone see a problem doing it this way.

shouldn't be a problem. i think epiphany quilts does something similar to this with a big breathable strip running down the middle of the hammock longways, and cuben on either side of it...

It's still cuben and sil... I just don't see a need when you can use a breathable, lightweight 30d or 20d fabric for a fraction of the cost.

Once you add the extra seams and stitching, you haven't really saved anything thing as far as weight. Be sure your factoring in all your extra material being needed for each individual strip of fabric. Each strip will have to be wider than needed for seam allowances.

Granted the stitching will allow for small pinholes, possibly aiding the breathability factor, just seems like a lot more work than needed for a functional quilt that still may have condensation issues.

Breathable fabrics are used for a reason.
If your determined to use sil and cuben, go for it. Just doesn't make sense to me. Trying to deflate/pack a full airtight quilt will be tricky too.

EDIT: I saw sil and not uncoated..by that I'm assuming you meant regular ripstop. Sil means it is coated.

Thats my bad I thought it was all Sil-nylon, eather coated or uncoated. I have actualy already got the breathable part, went with Momentum from Thrue Hiker. Gargoyle it does add 1/2 yard, 1/4 yard of of each, I factered that in.
I'm doing the work so its still cheeper then buying one already made. My only concern is will it be breathable enough and not have condensation issues mostly on the inside of the quilt.

Can't holes of smaller size be put in the impermeable barrier to reduce condensation to an acceptable level?

I finished cutting out the shell. Size is 45 in x 72 in. Just need to sew it together. Weighed the parts and they weigh 4.72 oz. With nine oz of down it will be 13.72 oz. That will give me 2 1/2 inches of loft. Suspention will add a little. I hope under 2 oz. Should be under the 16oz I thought it would be.

Most of the ones I have seen still use some rip stop so air can get in for loft or let air out so jt can be packed.
