    Scout Leaders?

I was curious and I see that it pops up from time to time but how many Scout Leaders or at least adults that help the leaders do we have here? I myself am a Assistant Scout Leader for the Boys Scouts and a Cub Master for the Cub Scouts. It would be cool to maybe throw out different ideas and activities that we can do with the scouts that pertain to Hammocking and Camping in general.

Example: Last meeting that we had I helped them all make coke can stoves with mess stands. They all loved doing the project and now they all have something to cook on when we all go out backpacking in July.

Including myself and the other other leader there are three other boys that hang.

    What do you think?

Hi Nighthauk. There are quite a few of us scouters on-board here at HF.

Here is another thread on the subject - http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=31196

Not to derail your topic, but the guide to safe scouting pretty much outlaws pop-can stoves in scouts. There are some threads about that as well, but I don't have one off-hand.

I am a Scoutmaster, we had a campout this past Friday. 5 hammocks and 4 tents. Knot tying has become much more fun because they get to see it used on a hammock. I have scouts sleeping in hammocks at their homes 5 or 6 days out of the week now.

I'm new to hammocks and plan to use one during summercamp this year to try and get my Scouts interested. Hoping it will become a DIY project and maybe help with some new high adventure ideas

Asst. Scout Master Troop 542 here! Howdy fellow Scouter! There are quite a few Scout Leaders and helpers around here. Do a search here for "Hammocking Merit Badge". You will find quite a bit of very good stuff there. (There may even be some merit badges available for purchase still.)

And I will second what Alamosa said. The alcohol stoves (and kerosene lamps, etc.) are against official Boy Scouts of America rules. It has to do with the liquid fuel and the possibility of uncontrollable fires. One spill at the wrong time and WOOFF!!!

    Either way, welcome!!

Papasmurf has an excellent thread about starting a cheap scouting hammock kit that might be worth looking into. Getting the scouts to make their own inexpensive hammock setup could be a fun activity. He also has his own website with some cool diy gear ideas. The scouts learn some skills, AND get to use what they've made to make their camping experience more enjoyable.

I was a lot happier not knowing that alcohol stoves are outlawed for scouts. I make them; I use them when I camp, and would love to get my scouts working on some (what's more awesome than fire projects?), but now that I know... I know. I might still get them working on a diy bushbuddy woodgas stove--not quite as easy, but still pretty cool.
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

I agree, making pop-can stoves on Webelos night was a sure hook to bring them in. It was a devastating blow when I learned this!

Man you all burst my bubble. I was all excited about using the the coke can stoves. Well I guess I can still use mine. I also have a brunton raptor and that works well. Well we will move forward and find some other cool projects.
I am now moving forward myself and thinking about makin a DIY hammock. So that may be in the near future for the troop.
