Will DWR ripstop be sufficient for tarp material??

No, it will quickly wet thru and offer little protection.

DWR is good for shedding light mist, resisting condensation, etc. For anything more, you want a more waterproof material like PU coated nylon, Silnylon, Spinnaker, or Cuben.

Yes, some members have done that successfully. There's a couple of good forum threads about that, beginning with this one.

The results usually wind up a bit heavier than commercial silnylon, but indeed cheaper.

The answer to that question is an absolute, unequivocal "It depends!"

    hehehe

Majority opinion is probably "no" but I have used some and had some qualified success _IF_ you are not expecting a long term torrential rain or long term high wind. It will do for a surprise shower under a nice existing canopy of leaves. But don't expect it to last in the monsoon season.

It's the fabric a light weight rain shell is made of. They will get you to shelter in a mild rain shower, but if you have to hike all day in a downpour it will soak thru. The same basic situation with a DWR tarp. Light rain you'll be okay. Wind driven torrential rain... not a chance. For a "fair weather camper" you'll probably be okay most of the time. But I wouldn't trust it on a long weekend in the spring/fall let alone a thru...
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Again Thnx.... I wasn't sure if the DWR would prevent the silicone from adhering to the fabric. I will try it out, once I get the tarp finished.
