Wow! This has turned out to be quite some thread hasn't it?

OP - my first solo was on the beach where I live as I spent so much time there fishing. Sounds like a plan, but can't help you with a venue I'm afraid.

Let us know how you get on...

First solo I did was last May. I really enjoyed it ...... But my wife was worried sick for two days. Where I was there was no cell signal so I had no way to let her know how I was.
I defanately want to go again. Perhaps I'll rent a spot communicator so I can post updated to her.

My main reason fowanting to go solo is I like backcountry camping. the family perfers car camping. I'm slowly trying to get them to convert.
But in the meantime I can hope for another solo this summer/fall

The more I do it, the more I realize that backpacking solo is the only way to go. Your own pace, your own enjoyment, and no worries if others are happy with it.

Canoe trips on the other hand...

I went Caribou hunting in Alaska once. It wasnt solo, but it was a unguided hunt. We each slept in our own backpacking tent....nothing like sleeping on the ground and being the bottom of the food chain....brown bears you know. I was just so tired each night it didnt matter. Of course sleeping with a 44 mag under my sleeping bag didnt hurt.

Lots of great quotes and sayings though. too many to name. *wheeeeeeezzz*

There is a near-solo outward bound story I want to tell but I'm a little forumed-out at the moment. I'll post it later today.

Yet more advice. Try as suggested with someone with you but "Far away" each trip, they move just a bit further, till out of hearing range unless you are screaming cause you are being eaten by a chipmunk.

Seriously, while I do think that would work, I've never had an issue. like many who have added to this post, I've spent my whole life camping, literally started before the age of 2, so the sounds in the woods put me right to sleep. Before any of you make comments: YES they had camping back then & NO I was never bothered by dinosaurs.

another hint: Try sleeping in the back yard (or of a friends If you don't have one) a few nights to get used to being alone, , , , but not.

Actually, the only 2 experiences (both on the AT) I have had where I was slightly "scared" I was in a group both times. I was a groundling back then. #1 a Barred Owl screamed at a rival from the tree my tarp was rigged to, I sat STRAIGHT UP, no transition from laying down to sitting. #2 These very bright white lights were flashing all around, not like lightning, brighter & pure white (to my eyes lightning is yellowish) & silent. Even the critters were silent (scared?). The talk on the AT the next day usually started with "SO, were you abducted by space aliens last night?" so I wasn't the only one to see that.
Both times, I went right back to sleep once the initial "Fright" was over.
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.

Hard work makes more good luck ~ John Gorka

The harder I work on the trail, the better I sleep, in the woods. It still takes me a couple nights to get it right though. Try more miles or more ups and downs.
