    Hem Question

I'm trying to make my first hammock and was curious about the hem's along the edge. I was reading the Speer book and it said it should be 1" - 1.5" hem for the hammock edge's. Would this be 1" rolled then another 1" and sewed through the 3 layers so the total width of the hammock would be reduced by 4"-6"??

Is this the recommended final width of hem's? I see some DIY for 1/2" rolled hem reducing the hammock by 2"

    Thanks in advance

I use a 1/2"-5/8" roll hem on the sides and sew through the 3 layers as you state. I could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time), but I see no reason for a wider side hem.

I usually use even less - fold 1/4", then another fold and sew. It's not too critical. You just want to cover up the raw fabric edge.

I wonder if maybe Speer recommends wider hems because they like to attach Velcro down both sides for bug net or underquilt attachment. Maybe.

    Hems

+1 for Jerry W. I use the smallest hems I can manage. Not as small as Brandon does at Warbonnet but the smallest I can handle comfortably. No problems...Bush

    Thumbs up

Thanks for the replies guys, so I guess when they mean 1/2" roll hem, it's roll it 1/2" then roll it 1/2" more.

Yes that Speer hammock does attach velcro along the sides so that very well might be the reason for the wide hems.

Again I appreciate the quick replies and hopefully I'll be hanging soon

You need to watch the language. If you are talking about "seam allowance" then 1.5" would give a ~.5" hem. If you are talking about a finished hem then 1.5" would be the width of the hem requiring a seam allowance of 3" added to the pattern. My guess is the 1.5" was the allowance with a finished hem of 3/4 inch. That would be wide enough for the velcro. 1.5" hem is HUGE unless you are hemming a skirt or something like that where you might want to adjust it later.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.
