Size for a homemade hammock

I made mine 50" wide (before hemming). It's wider than it needs to be in the middle, but it's just about right more toward the ends. I think 45" might be too narrow if you lay more toward one end like I do.

Has anyone ever tried to make them with different shapes? I keep hearing people talk about how they sides are falling in.

What about the normal rectangle but then on the sides cut a slight arch from end to end. Keeps the head and feet longer and the waist area shorter (If I am thinking correctly).

I thought about making one with catenary curved sides - I have this fun program to generate the curves, and it's sitting here getting mad at me because I don't use it very often. Over time though, I've sorta decided to leave the width in the middle because it allows me to move around easier.

I cut mine in a trapazodal shape. That along with whipping it a different way give me an asym shape similar to the HH. You are going to use about 3 extra feet of length going this route. Comfortable, but not the lightest option.

When I whip or knot the ends, I pull the edges about 2" more than the middle. That seems to keep the sides tight. I would be concerned with strength if you start cutting a lot of material away. Right now your weight is distributed along the width of the hammock. If the hammock is narrower, the same force is going to be applied to a smaller area.

But I haven't tried it. If you try it, post some pics and let us know how it works. That what I love (besides the comfort) about hammocking. It is still realitively new in the hiking world. There are still a lot of improvements and addons to be designed.
