what should i do with all this ripstop?

before i figured out hammocks, i was going to make myself something (not sure what, just new it would be something, lol) out of some silni. well, some sources told me to go to good ole wally world and it could be found occasionally, so off i went and found what ive got here now. i was advised to do the breath test, to see if it was sil or not, and i did it wrong and bought the whole skeen thinking i had stumbled upon sil.


so ive got 60 x 170" of this slightly shiny grey stuff. fun!

at least i think its ripstop....

Make yourself a gathered end hammock. You have plenty to make one and even a ridgeline organizer too!

you think what ive got will hold my fat arse? now that ive been playing with this stuff and other nylons, i wonder what the strength is.

Stick the whole bundle of fabric on a kitchen or mail scale and see how much it weights, then do some math dividing the weight by 7.87 (that's how many sq yards of material you got there) and that will tell you the weight of the fabric. Then use the chart on Warbonet's site to determine if it can hold your weight. I think it most likely will as ripstop nylon is some strong stuff.

First thing you need to know is the weight: 1.9 is common. 1.1 is desirable. Anything higher than 1.1 but less than 1.9, or heavier than 1.9 could be coated...

Next is it calendared (downproof): if one side is shinier than the other, it is. If you can look through the weave at a few inches, it probably isn't....

Is one side RUBBERY. If so, it's polyurethane coated. (TARP!) *normally >2oz/yd*

Third test: is it DWR (Durable Water Resistant coating) Sprinkle water on it, if it runs off, it's likely dwr.

Do the edges fray: take a look at the cut edge: Is it fraying on it's own. If it isn't: it is definitely coated. If it's not rubbery, then it could be sil-nylon. (sil is ULTRA slippery)

Any un-coated (or DWR) fabric would make great hammocks, TQ, UQ, etc. Coated fabrics would be good for UL packs, stuff sacks or tarps.

If you don't want it, one of us (ME?) will take all of it off your hands...

Looking at your pics more closely, I think it's the same green 1.1 uncalendared that I found some time ago... 14'? Not long enough for a DL hammock, but should be enough to make a hammock sock, overcover, etc...

I have some of that same stuff from wally world. It's 1.7 uncoated rip stop nylon. I had a double layered gathered end hammock made out of it to be used with a pad. It holds my friend who is 300 lbs and 6.5'. Detail Man made the hammock for me and he said it would hold an elephant!
