Some people have used grip clips with no ill effects and they work on the same principle. The issue is how smooth a pebble or whatever you use. The grip clips are a smooth plastic so they are easier on the material.

+1 on the grip clips. Had mine on for a full season without removal and haven't had any ill effects.
They do add some negligible weight to your tarp as compared to using what is available when you show up to basecamp, but I'd prefer the peace of mind of not using something that could possibly damage the tarp with irregular edges like a stone or a pointy end like an acorn.

I have tarp clips from Tarpaflex which work on this principle, and they have caused no damage. In addition, I picked up some small rubber balls in the party favor section at Target which weigh nothing, and can be placed in the tarp with no danger of ripping.
I actually made some small balls by tying some paracord in knots and put on my Guide Gear Tarp. The paracord balls are squishy so no damage, and super light, and work
