    SHT Shutdown?

Will the Superior Hiking Trail be closed if the Minnesota Government shuts down? I was planning a 5 night trip for July 3rd.

Yes, all the bear, deer, skeeters and wolves will be told to stay at home and off the trail.

I think not.......it is not a Government sponsored trail.....just a long path through the woods. Mainly private contributions and volunteers.

The SHT doesn't need any permits whatsoever, and there are no rangers on the trail. There would be no way it could get shut down. Its one of the easiest trails to go on logistically.

With no rangers or police to patrol it (if the shut-down happens?), who would give you a ticket??

As long as you're not planning to use any of the State Park facilities (spur trails, campsites, showers, etc.) you should be fine.
If your lucky enough to be outdoors, your lucky enough!

I'll call the main office tomorrow. We went through a scare a few months back with the possibility of a federal shut down. The talk about that was that while you can get on the trail, you are putting yourself at greater risk if you have an emergency. Since emergency services will only be skeleton crews.

Can anyone clear this up for some of us?

If the gov were to "shut down" - doesn't that mean the trails are open to all? If there's no one patrolling - who would site or fine you?

SHT is "managed" by the Superior Hiking Trail Association, a not-for-profit organization. No government funds involved. Maintenance is done by volunteers.

Using the State Parks for parking/trail access would be affected if the state goes into "shutdown" mode, but access through the state parks via the SHT is a non-issue. It's just a footpath...no gates or tickets or permits. Hike away!!

Emergency search and rescue services are often volunteer based. The "official" resources for those services are always skeleton crews. I don't think you be more at risk if the government shuts down. EMS is considered a high priority in many areas but even if the State Police were cut back most of the feet on the ground are volunteer anyway. At least that's how it is in PA, NY and any other place I've ever hiked or camped in.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.
