    To Loyalsock!

I'm doing the Loyalsock-Link Loop in Eastern PA next week, and I am looking for advice on my loadout. I'm down to 12.6 pounds baseweight, but could stand to cut at least another few ounces. I'll be arriving late Tuesday and will start hiking Wednesday, aiming to finish Thursday in the early afternoon, so figure a basic one-night loadout will suffice. Anyone have any advice on what to cut or maybe something that I've overlooked? Heres the link to my GoogleDoc:

    Loyalsock Link Loop

A few disclaimers: This is my first trip using my DIY IX TQ, which is why I've packed a few "warmer" bits of gear (i.e. UA Baselayer and MontBell ExLight). These two items are necessary, but I will entertain any other suggestions!

If you want to shave ounces then my suggestion is to leave either the lighter or striker behind and take the one you trust the most, granted I would never travel with only 1 way to start a fire myself either. If you don't mind chemicals switch out the water filter for Chlorine Dioxide (tablets or drops) that would save you nearly a pound alone.

That's what I come up with anyways if you want to cut some ounces. Personally 12.6 pounds is half what my bag I take to work weighs so thats an impressively light load to me.

Sorry, no weight saving suggestion as you are already way lighter than me.

Just wanted to wish you well and encourage you to carry a little more weight in the form of a camera so you can document the trip. The Loyalsock Link Loop is on my short list. Just did the Old Loggers Path a few weeks ago.

    Have fun!

Catavarie - I tried using drops last summer on two occasions and did not dig it at all. I could probably stand them in conjunction with an in-line filter, but drops alone make me wary and taste terrible. I'll probably try this sometime this summer, since it is cheap and light, and I know my filter is a huge penalty.

Knotty - I did the OLP last summer, it was beautiful, but I ran in to a lot of problems. (arrived late at night to a washed out road two miles away from the trailhead and had to leave my car and hike in, I got really sick on the first morning, it rained the whole time, etc.). I had debated doing the OLP instead of Loyalsock, but since I'm going solo and had a bad experience last time, I decided on Loyalsock. By the way, it looks like you and your daughter had a blast, and I will certainly be bringing my camera! (listed as Panasonic Lumix in my spreadsheet - a very necessary 9.9 oz.)

if you go to the ranger station to check in they will have you fill out a paper to let them know where you are going. It says -Start point, - End point.. If you write "parking lot" for both, it makes them mad... haha. Have fun up there and definitely bring a camera, with all the rain we got the waterfalls should be flowing well.

It was a blast, heck of a trip! I arrived at around 8PM on Tuesday evening, set up camp at Dutchman Falls and read until I fell asleep. My topquilt didn't keep me warm at all, so I ended up in my down jacket, but I slept well after bundling up. Wednesday I started off at around 8 in the morning and hiked 18 miles by 4PM, and then set up camp. Thursday I got up around 5, started off at 6, and hiked out by 8. The weather was fantastic, and I didn't get more than a bit of rain in the middle of the night. Pictures here: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...1&l=562544779e

Sounds like your doing well with the weight...I'm right at 13-14 lbs base weight myself. I recently began carrying a camera and enjoy it. So many neat-O things out in the piney woods that I like having pics of.

You had nice weather. Your pics have convinced me to make the Loyalsock my next hike.

Awesome Pictures and glad that you had a great time. I am hiking this trail this coming december and you just made me even more xited even though it is quite a ways a ways.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.
