Method for attaching tarp

wow this thread is so interesting! now i am wondering if i should try a CRL. currently i use what Hawk-Eye uses - (and who doesn't want to be more like Hawk-Eye? cord at each end of the tarp with Dutch's Tarp Flyz, which incidentally work well with 1.5 Z-line that Joe from Z-Packs sells. my tarp is a Z-Packs cuben fiber hammock tarp with doors.
i was thinking of a CRL with a Dutch clip on one end, a Tarp Flyz on the other end, and prussik knots to attach the tarp to the CRL. is the big advantage that you can hang the CRL easily and slide you tarp quickly in place over your hammock? any feedback is much appreciated

That's exactly why I like the CRL set up... it's quick to get up and once it's up the tarp is easily centered over you hammock. Check out his Dutch hook for the other end instead of the clip. I'd think that would be the lighter option and a quicker set up.

FWIW..... I use mason's line for the tarp ridgeline with prussiks that have a plastic toggle....... like Shug

Gone are my plastic toggles....s-biners for me. But as of now I am just doing a separate line from each end.

Like to hang the ridge line and tarp separately. Find it easier to get the ridge line hung without the tarp hanging from it.

Use 3 Prussics on the ridge line:

1. 1 for each end and
2. 1 for the loop in the middle of the tarp

I use trail sticks to attach the tarp loops to the Prussics. Easy to attach and I do not have to be concerned about losing a trail stick.

I also use trail sticks to attach the guy lines to the tarp loops.

I use 3 trail sticks and 3 Prussics to make a truckers hitch type arrangement for putting up the tarp and 1 trail stick on the other end of the ridge line (fixed eye spliced in the end, wrap tree, pull bight through eye and secure with trail stick.

I use a lot of trail sticks to hang my tarp, a JRB cat cut tarp. A total of 13:

1. 1 on first end of ridge line,
2. 3 on second end of ridge line to form truckers hitch arrangement,
3. 3 on tarp ridge line, one in middle and one on each end,
4. 3 per side for guy line pull outs.

I use 1.75 mm Lash-It for the ridge line and all Prussics. Never had a problem.

I have never run out of trial sticks yet and have never worried about walking off and forgetting one and losing it. Lost too much hardware on the trail because I forgot it or dropped it.

thank you Backpacker81! i meant Dutch Hooks - not clips. do you use a prussic knot to attach the hammock? i'll go look at some videos on this so as not to be a pest - i think ShadowAlpha posted the video of the Whoopies Complete System. thank you again for the reply! i think i'm finally starting to understand some of this stuff

I use Paul's double ridgeline setup from AHE with prusiks and nacrabiners. Works for me with ease.

I use a piece of cabling pull-string(load rating:200lbs, weight:35 ft/oz and no stretch when wet) with loops tied every foot or so with stout plastic S-hooks tied on to the center tie outs on my tarp with S-biners at each end. My tarp is 10'x12' and my ridge line is about 25' long. Any trees close enough for my hammock are close enough for my ridge line. Whatever diameter trees I use, I'm never far from a loop for the S-biners on the ends and the 1 foot spacing allows me to hook the tarps S-hooks taughtly at 10' or 12'. It's light and very fast to deploy.

I like to hang the ridgeline seperately from the tarp. this allows me to get the ridgeline nice and taut before attaching the tarp. Then use the s-biners to clip to the prussik loops on the CRL. The tarp goes up NICE AND FAST.
