hanging from chain link fence posts?

i don't have enough trees in my back yard to hang so i want to sink some posts to hang from.

my first thought was that i'd sink some 6x6 pressure treated posts to hang from but then i decided i wanted to make it movable.

i think someone on here had used galvanized fence posts, set in concrete to hang from.

what i'd like to do is have the posts removable so that i can take them out when not in use. could i sink shorter sections of pipe, larger diameter then the size i'll be hanging from, in concrete so that i can stand the hanging posts into the holes? i'd want the concrete to be level with the gound so that when i remove the posts, i could run my mower over them.

what size/gauge of galvanized posts would i have to use? would i have to have a support pipe on the top to keep the posts from bowing in?

I used the standard Lowes 6' posts for my chain link fence (4 1/2' tall). Put my hammock off it and it bent the pole. Would probably work if I'd known to put a couple of staked out lines off the back to counter balance the pull.

You might also consider making or buying a hammock rack. Moveable. There's a DIY fold down version on the forums that I was considering making.

being my family has been in the fence business for 30 some years i can say hanging from a fence post is a bad idea....
most fence post will bend under the weight ... unless you put in high quality poles ... and most ppl don't for a fence
2nd most fence post are only 2 foot in the ground... thats not deep enough for the weight of a person ... once you add in your weight you need the post to be down at least 3 feet... and the hole to be wide... the wider the better
this way there is alot of concrete holding the post in place so it won't shift


build yourself a stand ... or get one from a big box store
save yourself the problems of replacing fence posts ......

fence posts are to weak for this but you could use some sch 40 steel pipe. I would do it the way your planning but I would add some water valve boxes with removable lids to hide the pie and concrete in the ground. you can find these boxes in the plumbing department with the sprinkler system equipment, they ussually run about $10.00 each. Just spitballing here, but I like the idea of removing posts and replacing them when I want them. Hammock stands take quite bit of space, and most have that potentially backbreaking center beam. Would it be possible to set the posts at approximately a 30 deg angle or so? The angled posts should be able to lessen the stress from hanging so that a chainlink fencepost might work. Any engineers in the house? Flex those math muscles

I Used to have a set of 1.5" drop pipes I used as my poles that fit into a set of 36" 2" sleeves I pounded in the ground. They were all Stainless so they were pretty strong. But I still managed to bend them when I got the entire family in the hammock. Guy outs help but make sure you have suitable stakes for your soil conditions.

I did used to hang off a 5' fence post that used to actually be a fence post and it held me up fine.

You could do exactly as you suggest, with plenty of bury as GLP suggests, but also use a third pipe over head as a compression strut.. a-la Oldgringo.
