    a tree makes a widow...

Once again, we are reminded that it pays to inspect the trees near you when hanging your hammock: Three kids unharmed. Mother critically hurt, widowed.

Father killed when tree falls on tent in campground

    NEW YORK | Tue Jun 28, 2011 7:26pm EDT

(Reuters) - A man camping with his family was killed and his wife injured when a sycamore tree weighing several thousands pounds crashed onto their tent in a New Jersey campground [Delaware Water Gap] early on Tuesday morning...

Just up the road from where I live. Sad indeed. Heading to the Catskills in NY this weekend and I will certainly be aware of everything above us.

Ugh, one in a million chance of that happening. I feel for the family. That would probably ruin the children on the outdoors when something like this happens at that age.

Very sad. I'm always interested in why reporters include facts such as what type of tree it was that fell. I don't suppose it makes much difference. Thoughts and prayers go out to that family.

I beg your pardon. It DOES make a difference what kind of tree it was. Sycamores and cottonwoods are very "Trashy" trees, in that they drop twigs and branches at the least provocation. An ash or oak is much less likely to haul off and kill you.

Pardon given. So one should particularly beware of nearby Sycamores when setting up camp? In some cases, it's just luck of the draw as to which might fall.

Sounds like the whole tree came down on him! Dang! probably no amount of looking could have predicted that one.
