    The Perfect Trees

Hey all, first post, great forum.
I live in Southeastern PA. There have been some tragedies lately from falling trees and branches, one recent one on Bulls island on the Delaware river where I've hung by the weir dam.
I hang in my blackbird in my backyard as often as possible. The problem I have is that the trees are huge old growth hardwoods. I recently had to spend 10K to remove some of the trees too close to the house or damaged by carpenter ants. I've personally seen two old cherry trees fall right in front of me and watched a silver maple split in half and just miss my car (while I was pulling into the garage).
There doesn't appear to be any widow makers where I hang but there are some huge oaks and ashes within 100 feet that scare me.

My question to tree lovers out there:

I now have a nice clear area that I'm thinking of planting two trees to hang from in the distant future.
If you had a choice, what species of tree would you plant to hang from and how far apart would you plant them (for a WBBB)? I know I could build a stand but there's something nice about hanging from trees. I'm thinking long term here, maybe ten years out before they are ready to hang from.
Thanks for your replies in advance,

    DS

Just about any hardwood is ideal, about 15 feet apart.

For species selection, you really should check with an urban forester. Also, you mention old growth...those trees will tell you what is well adapted to your site, and what will "fit in" with the existing landscape.

    Planting your future

Plant three trees in a triangle. Then you can hang three hammocks and if something happens to one of them, you still have a place to hang a hammock.

    Palm Trees are fine

I've been hanging from palm trees for over 8 years with no problems. Like any trees you just have to make sure that they a wide enough. I once saw a guy hang his hammock from a pine sapling and it bent right over and put him on his butt. I'm not sure what he was thinking. I prefer large Oaks if I can find them and try and stay away from pines because they tend to be sappy down here. I doubt that you will find many palms in Bucks County anyway. Watch for dead branches.

Thanks all, great comments. I especially like Treerat's suggestion of three trees in a triangle and planting them about 15' apart.
I also enjoyed the backpackgeartest review, thanks for posting. I'm still doing research on the perfect tree, something that won't grow too high, has a nice canopy, and is indigenous to the area.
Dutch, you live in a beautiful area. Thanks all.

I was sitting on my back porch swing in texas when I was about 14. The strangest thing happened. I was literally looking at a pecan tree, and thinking, that would be weird if that tree fell over. and just at that moment, it did! fell right over. It was big too. I will never forget that. I almost thought (and still think) I did it with my mind. I try not to think about it when Im hanging.
Because you fall through the clouds if you try to lay on them, so the next best thing is a hammock.
