    Ghetto peapod sleeping bags?

As far as I can see, there aren't many hammocks that open at the feet, except for rectangular bags. So, let's assume most bags are going to require some modification to slip over your hammock anyway. That being said, what are some of the sleeping bags that you are confident are large enough to envelope a hammock?

I really like the idea of a Peapod and I'm not going to pay $300+ to get one.

A Western Mountaineering Sycamore (25 degree rating) has a two way zipper at the larger-than-mummy size foot box that could enable a hammock suspension to be passed through a minimally unzipped footbox opening.

I did some sleeping bag pod testing this winter past. Had great success.
I used a WM 20º down bag....it has a long side zipper so it worked excellento!
Here is a video so you can take a peek.
Long zipper or foot-box zipper is key.

The WM bags are anything but ghetto as their $365 price indicates.

I wouldn't feel too bad at least experimenting with a cheap summer bag. I'm not necessarily going to be doing any winter camping any time soon. I know I don't need a pod at all. It just looks more snug.

There's quite a few cheap bags for tall folks out there. There's also overbags from Big Agnes.

Look for a bag that you can zip together with a second one. Those always have a zipper that go all the way down the foot box and then uncouple, that should make it usable in a pea pod type of arrangement.

The key idea for this is that the zipper of the bag needs to go across the foot. That would probably include almost every rectangular bag (IIRC) that can "open to serve as a quilt".

    Patrol bag semi peapod

Depends on how big around YOU are, more than the hammock.
I modified a military MSS patrol bag with the gortex bivy cover to slip over the foot end of the hammock.
My 14 yr old son can get in it and zip it all the way up,
I can not say the same for me!

Picture is him hanging with it zipped up. He says it is toasty!

Wat I have done is sewn in a mostly full leangth pocket on the bottom of of the ENO doublenest to slide a pad in, and flipped the patrol bag UQ over to cover the top as a TQ and it worked fine for me in 19 degree temps this past winter.

What I normally do Is use a cheesy rectangle sleeping bag as a peapod, but what I plan to do is turn a cheap rectangle into a under quilt and turn my Cole Talos mummy bag into a peapod by cutting a whole in the bottom and sew a channel around the bottom with shock cord and a cord lock.
