You can also use a Perma-Lok needle. I made one out of a hollow #5 knitting needle, but haven't been able to find another one. Perma-Lok needles are used a lot for leatherworking, but the principle's the same.

PF - I've use Perma-Lok needles for paracord fancy work but have never been able to get them to work with Amsteel. The cut end of the Amsteel blossoms too much and I can't get it into the hollow end of the needle such that the internal threads take hold. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Yeah, but Opie is keeping from you the received or given wisdom I just came across today:
"Not blue masking tape"
(which I assume to be the hi-zoot stuff from 3M that removes cleanly when left on for its intended masking purpose for a long time.
And, I can add to that short list the first tape I found in a drawer, black plastic "electrician"s" tape is certainly lousy: it looked glossy, which meant "smooth and slick and low friction" to me, but in fact too much of the glue had transferred from the sticky side to the smooth. Of course, YMMV.
i have used the splicing fid, pusher set for larger rope work- they work but the price is rather steep unless if youre doing this sorta thing on a regular bases. i made some mooring lines and running rigging for a sail boat. in retrospect i wish i had just gotten by with scrap wire and my own ingenuity, rather than spending the money(btw i'm sure i still have it kicking around someplace with other junk). for smaller stuff like suspention- the kit will not be useful at all.
