    Strap length when using rings

Hey all, first post here on HF, been lurking for about a week doing research.

I just got an ENO doublenest for my birthday and was looking to use a rings & polypro suspension for simplicity's sake.

After much poking around I'm still not sure what length to get for the straps. Many people seem to say 6 ft is good but i'm not sure if that's just for the tree hugger part or also taking the distance from the tree to the hammock into consideration.

    I live in upstate NY.

    Help a confused noob out!

a lot of people use 12 ft straps - I used 15 foot straps which came in handy cause I generally used the round turn and two half hitches approach to tying the strap to the tree and I sometimes had to use a fairly large tree for support when I was constrained about where I could / wanted to hang - ex campsites in the Smokys

the six foot strap is referring to the tree hugger length when using something else (ex WS) to go from the strap to the hammock

12 to 15 feet will probably keep you hanging no problems.

Great, thanks guys that clears things up.

Just ordered 30 ft of polypro from strapworks, figure I can always cut some down if it turns out to be too long.

I use webbing and rings on my ENO BN. I work in Clifton springs so if you’re interested we could meet up and I’ll show you what I use.

Keep 'em 15' on each end until you're sure. You might run into some big trees.

It's harder to add length back than to cut some off later...

This is good advice. It really depends on your trees. Mine are 12' and there was only once where I got worried. I was at Cumberland Island, GA and had huge oak trees to go around. I barely made it and only because I was able to pull off a weird angle through the fork in the tree. 15' would've been nice in that case. In reality, though, 12' is almost always too long but I always say it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
