I'm taking mine out tomorrow for and overnighter to yellow river state forest. Supposed to get down to 42 and foggy. It will help me decide on what my warmer quilt will be. 3 season or winter burrow. I'm thinking if I'm comfy at 42, I'll just skip right to the winter burrow as I already have the Winter incubator. I used a 15 degree synth bag and a pad year round before I went to quilts so I'm kinda used to overkill.

OMG! As I lifted the box the UPS guy left today I thought, Oh shoot, they forgot the bag. I have an 8 yr old Kelty 20 deg down bag & thought I knew what a stuffable down bag was but this is amazing. Can’t wait to see how cold it’ll go. So here’s my question - I’m 5'5" and am thinking I’d like to remove the top 2 (or 3?) chambers & use that down to beef up the bag. I guess I’d finish it off with the drawstring closer that it has now (or not - please advise. I’m new at all this). It would, of course, be tightening a now backless TQ but I planned to attach omni tape to the top corners of quilt & to my SPE (The SPE is my first DIY camping project).

I’m planning an AT through hike year after next & am way more concerned about cold & pack weight than I am about bears & snakes. Is there some argument against doing this? (The bag shortening I mean - not the hike.) Hard to believe how quickly I’ve gone from being apprehensive about cutting the back out of a perfectly good topbag to considering really mangling it. I’d appreciate any advice.

I decided to pick one up as well. If I like it guess I will have to supply the little lady with one. Looking forward to testing it out. Might take me to the 2nd fl hang to get us to temps where it would be needed.

Taking mine to the superior hiking trail next week. Lows in the low 40's. Hopefully this and my winter incubator will keep me warm enough with a down sweater and long underwear.

was it warm enough for 42?

    Doody,

Was this quilt warm enough for 42 degrees with your winter phoenix? I am wondering to see if I want to purchase this rab quilt or a warmer quilt. I have a 3S 3/4 crowsnest and am wondering if this would be sufficient to take on the Art Loeb Trail in NC around October 14th. The lows will probably be around there, perhaps colder.

Used mine this weekend with my 3 season incubator to a low of 51 degrees. was quite warm and worked well in side the hammock.
note: was plenty long enough for 6' 4" me!

Sounds like the test results are positive so far? I was gun shy after reading a pretty scathing review on backcountry.com (strangely, it appears that that review has been taken down). The reviewer claimed that the quilt was rated +32, he used it on a weekend hike and froze. He went on to claim that he complained to backcountry who later revised the rating to +55.

Do any of you 'early-adopters' have any feeling on how this would perform in the 40's. I'm not planning any 4-season trips and only want to buy one piece to gear... and the price tag on this is pretty tantalizing.

Mine was plenty warm at 43 this morning.

Going to hang tonight and see how it feels near 30.

Tupelo - I'm 6'3" and held off on ordering this because of the length, how far up on your face does the fabric come up? I definitely need an uber-lite TQ. Then a WBBB and a UQ. Yay gear.
