    Western North Carolina

I often pack into Harper Creek in the Pisgah NF and love the area. The trail rating is "difficult". However it has become more difficult foe me as my bad knee's get worse. Does anyone know of other locations in western NC that would be easier to access (for me) and would still be in a wilderness area and not a "campground"? Not being familiar with areas outside of the Harper Creek/Wilson Creek location you may need to be specific with your suggestions.

Thanks very much for your help.
    David

Probably a silly question on my behalf, but have you tried reducing the weight of your gear?

Most "Moldy Oldies" here (like myself ) have had to go that route for similar reasons.

I certainly have and it is better, just trying to hedge my bet.

I have a book "North Carolina Hiking Trails" 2nd edition, by Allen de Hart (man's a legendary super hiker) that you'd be welcome to look thru, as long as it's returned in a timely manner and in same shape as received.

    Loaded with great hikes !

I have his "South Caroilna Trails" 4th edition book as well.

Thanks for the generous offer, I'll see if I can find that book at Borders.
    Thanks, David

The Pink Beds Loop and Graveyard Fields Trail are two that come to mind. Both are relatively easy trails compared to a lot of western NC. The last time I did Pink Beds, it was no longer a loop due to beavers damming up a creek and flooding a section. It was still a nice hike in and out. The Barnett Branch Trail crosses the loop and will take you north to the Mountains to the Sea Trail. You have a few more options there.
Are you looking to camp or just hike?

Thanks Swampfox. I am looking to camp. I really prefer remote/wilderness camping to campground style camping.

I used to talk on the telly to a ranger at the Pisgah Ranger Station at Hendersonville that knows some great "easier" hikes with fishing as well. He's an older gentleman and is very knowledgeable, as he's hiked the area most of his life.

If I can find his name (don't remember it now) I'll let you know.

I can't say enough about the Chatooga river area. Easy hikes, the deeper you go, the more remote and secluded it will be.
