    Sport nylon?

Can anyone tell me the possible weight of this fabric and/or how suitable it is for a hammock? I ran a search on this first but didn't get much. I found this material at a Joanns that was closing for $1/yard and couldn't leave it there. It is labeled "sport nylon", is not calendered, and obviously heavier than ripstop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

probably 1.9 oz/sqyd. Might be 2.2 or so. Either way you would be fine using it for a hammock. You probably would not want to thru hike with it (weight). But for normal use you should be fine.

    If it's this:

    http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog/p...RODID=prd13084

it's 2.75 ounces per square yard (joann's website says it's 93 grams per square meter--DANG metric system!!!! )

It's the only thing listed as "sport nylon". Good find!

Hear ye hear ye... Let it be known that names like "Sport Nylon" can mean virtually anything. There are no standards for names like that. Taffeta is a weave pattern... Denair is a fiber size... "Sport nylon" is a marketer's brain cramp.

Good find pipsissewa you are probably right. But what they have on the website may not be what they have in discontinued stock in a closing store.

I believe the OP meant the store was closing (everything on sale) rather then closing out a discontinued product.

Understood... I'm simply suggesting the website may not be indicative of the fabric in possession. My guess is the product in the store is also not transferable to other stores. So there is no great loss writing it off for a $1. Anything current was probably reclaimed by Joannes long ago. In any event the fabric would be easily suitable for hammock intended for use for a weekend or short distance backpacking. No problem at all for any time that weight does not matter.
