    What's the "R" Value?

I see you all mention this a lot, it's on many websites that sell cold-weather gear. How do you interpret it when you see a #? Thanks.

If I remember right it is used as an insulation rating of what 1 foot of concrete will insulate. i.e. R value of 1 = insulation of 1 foot of concrete and a R value of 5= insulation of 5 feet of concrete.

It is a standard set up for house insulation I think.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

The R value is the Resistance of heat transfer of the material or system.

The higher the R value indicates a greater resistance to heat transfer than a lower R value.

The rating system is on a linear scale. Therefore an R value of 2.0 provides twice the insulation value as an R value of 1.0.

All things being equal (cost, weight, vapor transfer, comfort to touch, etc.) buy the higher R value for insulating properties for winter warmth.
