Underquilts $$$$?

I have looked at a few underquilts, why are they just as expensive as the hammocks themselves? Are there any underquilts that fit an HH that are under $100?

Mainly it is the materials, and the amount of time it takes to put them together. We are a specific niche, and so far no giant companies have started producing underquilts. All the underquilts both down or synthetic are produced here in the USA, so you don't have little Chinese children sewing them for rice. Both JacksRBetter and Ed Speer's make and sell AWESOME down underquilts, and as far as I know, my wife is the only one sewing synthetic quilts commercially right now. She can make you a single layer 5oz Climashield 48"X72" Comforter Underquilt for $100. You might try www.kickassquilts.com to see if they still are making the Potomac underquilt. Sorry, that your choices are slim.

$100....that's a great price. Buy it! I just made one out of the 5oz climashield and it kept me comfortable to below freezing. Not sure what the actual temp was but everything was frozen in the morning. Last time I checked that means it was below 32.

I've been through the pads and I'm pretty convinced the UQ is the way to go. You can always augment it with a thin pad if needed.

Like the man said, there is a lot of time and materials in them.

Think about them like this, a quality sleeping bag will run you around $300. Underquilts are basically sleeping bags shaped a little different and a little smaller. So paying $200 to 300 isn't unreasonable by any means.

If you look at 900 fill down sleeping bags, you may find that the quilts are very competitive in price with the same in a sleeping bag, even cheaper in most cases.

You may actually find your quilt is so dogon comfy that you use it more often...like all the time.

besides my RMS loft doesn't get compressed if I store it on top of my bed...right?? ......

I would go with 44in wide and about 60in long and go with a short pad for the legs, lighter, less bulk and you have a pad to go to ground (I know, perish the thought!).

hmm, I am thinking of butchering an elderly down bag to serve as an under quilt on my HH exped asym, is this doable?, is it advisable? does anyone have a rough shape to cut the under quilt to? I have noticed that some underquilts do not cover your legs, this on the HH would be an advantage, as it would leave the entrance un-encumbered.

Any thoughts gratefully recieved.
