    DIY community

I like to think I am a valued member of the DIY community so I spend a lot of time thinking about our little niche in the forums. I've been wondering what we look like as a group. I suspect some folks joined specifically for the DIY information while others just stumbled in to it. Even others shake their heads at the lunacy of building our own stuff while others wish they had the "guts" to jump in and find out if the water really is fine.

I thought I would start a poll to try and uncover some of that information. Just for the sake of curiosity. So here is an effort for us to get to know us a little better... Could be interesting.

ARG.... the FAQ said I would be sent to an option to start the poll and I wasn't ..... grrrrr. If this is important to anyone but me help me out here.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I'm here with you Rev. I make all my own gear right down to my packs. Keeps me sane.

I'm sitting here splicing cord because we all know the Devil makes work for idle hands

I'm clueless as to starting polls

And just so you know... I have always gone wherever you have posted, because you are concise, and speak like someone who knows. I wanted my own gear, and was inspired to learn to sew in a professional manner by your vids and posts. So there, I said it.

Hmmm... on reading the FAQ again the "may" was in there.... so I guess in this case I may not. Oh well.... A poll would be nice but I am having a hard time formulating the choices anyway. So... we'll see.

Ah, don't sweat it. Polls can be real confining and skew the real data by forcing people into groups they really don't belong in anyway.

I love making my own gear. Sometimes I think I enjoy making it as much as using it.

I don't make everything but I have done top & bottom quilts, insulated sleep socks, mittens and winter hats using both down and synthetic materials. I have made my own tarps and recently, I have started trying my hand at hammocks. I've also made silnylon hooded ponchos that cover my pack and have sleeves to cover the arms.

I know that cuben is in my future so, I keep my eye on the whole cuben scene to determine whether that will be a DIY project or a purchase.

A bit of history; I have been a lightweight backpacker for many moons and started making some of my own gear several years ago. However, the production really ramped up after I discovered Hammock Forums about 3 years ago! And, I must add a big THANK YOU to Rev for his tutorials! It's like having him look over my shoulder as I sew

Previously, I had zero experience with a sewing machine and no family or friends with sewing experience. If I can do it, anyone can. And surprisingly, my stuff doesn't look half bad (although my daughter refused my offer to make her prom dress )
