    Unhappy Awesome Hennessy, Lame Tarp

I have a Hennessy ultralite explorer which I really like. What I don't like is my feet getting wet at three in the morning from a big storm. I think my stock tarp is too small....I'm hiking the Appalachian trail next year and I want some better coverage.....any suggestions on what to move up to? Looking to spend $150 or less....

Don't jump too soon. Thru hiking the AT puts weight at a premium. The stock tarp is one of the smallest around and it _can_ keep you dry if you pass the learning curve. I agree it is steep. But it might be worth the weight savings to persevere with it. Site selection and pitching prowess are the two premium areas where the learning curve kicks in.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I agree with ramblinrev the stock HH tarp can give complete protection in the worst conditions when used properly. Things to consider separate ridge-line for tarp hung lower on the tree then the hammock and sight selection. I spent a month and a half on the southern section of the AT this spring through thunder storms and nearby tornados. The HH stock tarp kept me bone dry while some of my minimalist fellow hikers sleeping under tarps and tents struggled.

I think you can make the stock tarp work if you want but like the said its gonna take some practice. I love to have a big huge tarp but I know that doesnt fly with you AT guys. but again I think you can check out these two tarps at wildernesslogics.com the big daddy or the tad pole. both have gotten great reviews. both under 100

The ends are water collectors moving what water gets in them with great haste to where your butt is. Clark and likely some others tent the ends with triangles of fabric. Any chance the lw and inexpensive fix is in something similar? You don't have to shield much.

I should have picked up that 3 yard scrap of bright 1/16' monofilament by the side of the road yesterday. Light, and stiff enough to spring away and resist hand-coiling. A tensioned arc in it through a channel, would have been enough to support a curve in a 2ft wide edge of a 2sq ft nylon triangle, such as would do the job for you

If you don't mind a few extra ounces, the HH hex tarp is a good fit - gives ample room for porching the tarp and more flexibility. The 70D version is cheap too but might be a tad heavy/big if you're ultralighting your hike.

Thanks Greg for the recommendation, but the Grizz Beaks won't work with the stock asym Hennessy tarp because of the tarp's shape. ZQ

Might want to check out OES ( http://www.outdoorequipmentsupplier.com/ ) and JRB ( http://www.jacksrbetter.com/index.htm ) as well. Brian at OES has different size and weight tarps (from different materials) and the Jacks used to have a nice 8' x 8' tarp - they may not anymore but do have a 10' x 10' and a hex in addition to their larger 11' x 10'.
