can you off center a seam from the ridgeline?

I was just thinking about ways to save some fabric and it brought the question up. Why have the seam created when joining two halves on the ridge line? Could you not have the seam 10" to the side or would this cause a problem? Would it not make a bit of sense to not have all that tension on a seam and instead just having it on straight fabric?

    Gargoyle has done this successfully.

Like Shane said Gargoyle is the master at this, but he does it for extra width, or added features like his new skylight tarp not for strength. The sewing of the ridge line actually adds strength to the seam so that it does handle the stress of being pulled in set up. Gargoyle will have to comment on his thoughts if being stronger that way or not.

    huh?!

I'll toss in some pics, or theres some on my site.
The seam is the strongest part, due to the extra fabric, IMO. I've never tested this theory to failure or any technical data, but I feel confident I'm right. So thats why most folks do the ridge at the seam.

Sew your seam straight and flat and you'll be able to pull it any direction.
Running a ridge off-center is doable. Your tie-outs need to be good. Cat cut is usually limiting to the set up options.

I'll use this recent example 'cuz the colors are vivid for a visual reference.
Heres an off center ridge with a seam on either side.

Same tarp pitched as a lean-to.

Same tarp spun so the ridge is running at a 45* to the ridge.

Thanks for the comps guys, I am not the first guy to string up a tarp weird tho

Nope, but you have probably made more than anyone for the different/tricky pitch.

Sorry, I'm just catching up to Streamline's idea. Here's another way to save fabric on a DIY tarp that was discussed recently:
