dutch ive used a lathe like that to "mill" stuff. had an old metal bodied drill upside down in a table vise, and either stuck the part into the jaws (if it were small enough) and used files to shape, or the opposite to polish (with a buffing wheel in the drill) stuff. great for getting a good buff.

Dutch, I'll send you a pic tonight of the lathe, pretty simple, boards in a vice to protect the drill case and a ball bungee to hold the trigger down...
