New to hammocks from Morris County, New Jersey

    Hi.

I've been interested in trying hammock sleeping/camping for the last week, trying to read and learn as much as I can before I finally make my first hammock purchase. There's too much info on here though! I'm not sure if I want to go all out and buy a complete hammock/bugnet/tarp system for $150+ right off the bat, or buy a cheap hammock just to get a feel for it right away. I was at Blue Ridge Mountain Sports in Madison last week and actually regret not buying one while I was there.

If one of you weirdos* with a dozen hammocks lives near the Morris County, NJ area I would love the opportunity to try some hammocks. I'll bring beer!

    * I mean the good kind of weirdo, obviously

You guys have built a nice community here
    Thanks all

Welcome! I'm a new hanger myself. I'm sure your neighbor Knotty will chime in soon.

I wouldn't mind attending your demo if you get one. I have a couple of WBBBs, an Ogee tarp, and a custom OES 12x10. I've yet to get out with them. Let me know!

Welcome from Mercer County. I know there's a debate about if that's South or North Jersey so, let's call it central. Blue Ridge is a real nice store with some great gear. If they have a sale, pick up a hammock cheap. Or, you could do the DIY route for very little $$ an a lot of satisfaction. I've got 5 hammocks - An ENO, WBBB and then 3 DIY along with two tarps. I'm always up for goofing around with gear and may be hitting the Catskills in the near future. Oh yeah, look at my avatar; that was taken after someone offered me beer.

    welcome to the madness

we do have lots of great gear choices and it can be fun just trying to figure out which piece of gear to get next. I make spread sheets listing the features of the products I am considering getting and read the comments in the forum and ask questions before I buy. If you get something that does not work out there is always the For Sale section of the forum.

Welcome, I'm a newbie too. I'm about 3 hours from the Catskills and would also relish a chance to hang with the experts.

Sweet!! I just spent the last half hour hanging in my first rig.

I picked up a Byer Traveller Lite at Ramsey Outdoor for $20. Hung it up between a pine tree and pear tree in my backyard (the only trees in my backyard, which just happen to be the right distance apart). I newby rigged it using some paracord I had lying around, then I switched to some polypropylene which seems to stretch just a little bit less. I guess whoopie slings and tree huggers will be my next purchase. It was a bit of a pain to center it, made me realize why everyone around here seems to love whoopie slings.

    Today was an epic win.
